My background is chemistry, I have a first class MChem and PhD in chemistry from The University of Liverpool. I have just completed my PGDE as part of a school centred initial teacher training course and was graded outstanding. My experience as a school teacher was ages 11-18. I was awarded a Royal Society of Chemistry scholarship to complete my teacher training which provided additional training and support throughout last year.
I have been employed as a research chemist but have spent time outside of work as a chemistry tutor for students of various abilities and levels.
I have experience with key stage 3 science and key stage 4 (GCSE) Chemistry. I have taught undergraduate students chemistry both in the laboratory and in tutorial classes whilst obtaining my PhD. I have mentored PhD students during my research career and participated in problem based learning sessions to further advance these students. I spent a year tutoring students from key stage 3 through to A-level chemistry.
My approach is to thoroughly research the exam boards curriculum for the student that I will be tutoring and tailor my teaching to each individual. I like to use past exam papers and question papers to see where the individual may be struggling, and then focus on improving the knowledge in that area.
