Hi, I’m Kindha, and I am a third-year student at Imperial College London, studying Medicine, which involves a lot of Biology and Chemistry. I am enthusiastic about science and maths, having also done Maths and Physics at A-Level. I find the interplay between the sciences fascinating and I aim to make my students as passionate about these subjects as I am!

I recognise that for some students who may struggle with these subjects, science and maths may not be particularly interesting or exciting. I remember as a pre-GCSE student having no real interest in the sciences - but through hard work and determination, I found that as I converted my grades to A*s, my love for science developed and I went on to take them all for A-Levels (something I wouldn’t have dreamed of before). To truly excel in something, you need an appreciation for the subject matter beyond the curriculum, and that’s why I really encourage students to ask questions and get involved.

In addition to my academic pursuits, I am an avid piano player and enjoy composing in my free time.

Tutoring Experience

I have many years of experience teaching a wide range of students in a variety of subjects. Some of my first tutoring experience was helping GCSE Biology, Chemistry, and Maths students improve their testing scores, to great success. I worked with them on a one-on-one basis, with each session identifying their progress in the classroom, what they were finding difficult, and tackling it together. I found that by focussing on the basics and building up, rather than just trying to teach them from what they were learning in class at the time, they improved much faster.

More recently, I have specialised in tutoring A-Level students in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Maths. Additionally, I work with prospective Medicine applicants, mentoring them through admissions tests (UCAT and BMAT), as well as personal statements and interviews. Working with older students, I honed my technique, appreciating that tutoring is a collaborative affair – it is important that the student doesn’t feel that they’re back in their classroom being talked at rather than actively taking part.

I enjoy seeing students flourish over the course of my time with them, growing in confidence and making marked progress. Having worked with 100s of students, I’ve gained valuable insight into how to engage and adapt to different learning styles and personality types.

Tutoring Approach

No two people learn the same, so I always like to start by assessing where the student is at and then working with them to come up with a plan of action to get to where they want to be. I tailor my sessions to the student, identifying with them how they learn best and what they feel they struggle in.

My teaching style is very active - I firmly believe that practice is the key to solidifying learning. After working to build thorough understanding of the foundations of a subject, I like to spend time doing a lot of practice questions, quizzes, and past paper questions. This can sound daunting, but to me you gain more from attempting a question, getting it wrong, and learning from it than you do simply reading theory repeatedly.

Tutoring is a balance of working with the student to improve, whilst avoiding creating a school environment, where they may feel less confident and comfortable to ask questions. I aim to help my students really enjoy science, beyond just what they’re taught in the classroom, and so I welcome engaging conversation to foster a positive learning environment.

I plan lessons based on what the student is learning in school, to optimise their understanding of the content and so their performance. I find it best to be adaptable to what the student needs – often students will struggle in the classroom as they don’t understand more foundational concepts, so it is more suitable to work on this before we move onto new content.
