Personal Description:

I have a strong scientific and academic background with a first class Masters in Chemistry degree. Since graduating, I spent 15 years working as a research chemist within the pharmaceutical industry before becoming a primary school teaching assistant. I have continued my own education, taking several Open University courses (chance risk and health (statistics), human genetics and health issues, human biology and molecular and cell biology) and I am currently studying education theory and practice. I am a mother to an inquisitive 4 year old boy so am becoming adept at answering the question "but why?".

Tutoring Experience:

I have tutored maths and science from primary age to A level, tailoring my approach to the individual student's needs. Students have benefitted from exam technique coaching, looking at specific topics and general work to build confidence and increase enjoyment of a subject. During my time as a medicinal chemist I have supervised industrial placement students as part of their degree programmes. I was a member of the Society of Chemical Industry Young Chemists Panel for several years which involved organising conferences and providing education support. I now provide support to classes in years 3, 4 and 5 within a junior school.

Tutoring Approach:

I like to look at problems from different angles, so will try to explain a theory or concept from a different perspective if one approach does not appear to be working. I think people learn best and remember things if they have solved a problem themselves rather than being simply told a solution, so I aim to provide support, guidance and questioning to enable the student to problem solve themselves. I am very enthusiastic about maths, science and sharing knowledge.
