I am a highly experienced and talented English teacher, currently working at a comprehensive secondary school in inner London. I very recently reached the end of my maternity leave and have now returned to teaching on a part-time basis (as mother to two wonderful little boys). I believe that every young person deserves the opportunity to excel in my subject and that it is the job of the teacher to personalise the approach to suit the needs of the individual. Teaching isn't about the teacher, but the learner, and equipping the learner - not only with relevant knowledge - but with a skill set that they will be able to utilise for themselves. We learn best when we enjoy what we are doing. Therefore, positive relationships and innovation are at the centre of what I do.
Based upon my extensive experience (see below), I specialise in tutoring students studying for the English GCSE (or iGCSE) courses. Although my knowledge and expertise extends into different areas, I have established a very successful career based upon my experience (and ability to get excellent results) within this specific field. Students need that all-important C grade (or above!), and it is my job to ensure that they get it!
I have nine years' teaching experience in schools across London and Kent and have been the Deputy Head of a very successful English department for the last four years. My role as Key Stage 4 Coordinator means that I am solely responsible for the implementation and delivery of the English GCSE programme within the school. This includes designing schemes of work for entire year groups, training staff, managing data and setting up interventions across the upper school. It also involves liaising directly with the GCSE exam boards. In addition to this, I am responsible for the moderation of exam assessments, including coursework and mock examination papers. What this basically means is that I have an intricate understanding of the GCSE specifications and know exactly what the examiners are looking for.
As a classroom teacher, I have an excellent results rate. I have been consistently identified as a 'go-to' for teachers wishing to improve their practice and pride myself on my ability to help students to 'get it'. I make a point of exposing my students to the highest level criteria and ensure they are given the opportunity to apply this in their own work.
English is a seemingly complex subject, and I personally love the world of possibility created by it. For those with a more logical mind, however, there are actually very simple criteria which examiners look for when reviewing a student's work. Once students are equipped with a sound knowledge of these expectations, it is actually fairly easy for them to apply these and succeed!
I am able to help students in all aspects of the GCSE course across all exam boards. This includes building upon general reading and writing skills, general exam skills and/ or help with specific coursework/ controlled assessment assignments. I will need to carry out an initial consultation at our first meeting to ascertain approximate working level and areas of need. A sample of your child's writing will be most helpful (and an English exercise book from school is always a useful reference for me). I will also need to know the GCSE course being studied (where appropriate), including the exam board and the specification code. Your child's English teacher (or Head of Department) will be able to provide you with this information. I am willing to work with all abilities - from 'D/C borderline' issues (securing that all important C grade) to A/A* master-classes. I am also able to assist with GCSE retakes for sixth form students.
My approach is based on personalisation to meet specific area(s) of need. I have a knack for building strong rapports with students in a short space of time, and aim to deliver a careful balance of realistic goals and very high expectations. With my extensive experience, I am able to outline the requirements of the GCSE course in a way that is simple and easy to apply.
(I am happy to offer Key Stage 3 tutoring to those requesting it. I have taught across Key Stages 3 and 4 for the entireity of my career and have an equally sound knowledge and understanding of the National Curriculum for Key Stage 3. Again, I will be able to ascertain your child's specific areas of need (as well as existing strengths) and work towards improving their overall command of the English language. Starting tutoring early will make the transition to GCSE, college courses and university easier, as well as equipping your child with the ability to express themselves effectively in written form. We also look at the reading and spoken aspects of the curriculum, in line with specific requests and requirements).
**Initial consultation: £15. This will enable me to meet with you and your child, assess current working level and discuss aims and future projections. I will need a sample of your child's writing for this (so that I can gauge the level that your child is working at). It would also be very useful if your child's English book was available to look through. Lessons thereafter are charged at £35 for Key Stage 3 English (Year 7 through to Year 9) and £40 for GCSE/iGCSE tuition.
***DISCOUNTED RATES AVAILABLE FOR GROUP SESSIONS
I look forward to hearing from you.
