Katie

My name is Katie and I am an exceptionally experienced teacher of English with a passion for helping students progress, no matter their starting point.

I have worked in secondary schools across London & Kent as teacher, Head of English, and Senior Leader. A key and enjoyable aspect of my role is developing trainee and newly qualified teachers across all subjects via training sessions, lesson observations and mentoring. I particularly enjoy delivering training to teachers within the subject of English both within my own school and to teachers in other schools.

In addition to my extensive teaching experience, I also carry out work as a GCSE examiner (and have examined both the English Language and Literature papers). This affords me an intricate understanding of the GCSE specifications, and knowing exactly what the examiners are looking for.

My passion in my work is in equipping young people with the skills and confidence to succeed and I really enjoy the opportunity that 1:1 and small group sessions provide for this to take place.

Tutoring Experience

Based upon my extensive experience, I specialise in tutoring students studying for the English GCSE & iGCSE courses, but am open to working with students at all levels of secondary English, including A Level/IB, depending upon the specification being taught. I will only take on work if I feel I am expert in the courses being delivered and able to support your child to attain above expectation. I would advise caution where tutors are offering expert service across the board as English is such a vast subject, and intricate knowledge of all set texts would be incredibly rare.

I have an excellent track record of results (as both class teacher and private tutor) and pride myself in being able to successfully adapt my teaching to suit my learners' needs. I have successfully tutored a range of students, including those with specific SEND needs, those with gaps in their learning due to time away from school, and those with an ambition to secure top grades in order to secure their place on their chosen FE course(s) with grade 7 to 9 masterclasses. The joy for me is in tailoring an approach that works for the individual and creating the ideal climate for learning, whatever that looks like.

Tutoring Approach

My approach to tutoring is to personalise every session to the learner. No two sessions will be the same because no two students are the same.

The greatest barrier to success in my experience is confidence (or lack thereof).

I have a knack for building strong rapport in an incredibly short space of time, and aim to deliver a careful balance of realistic goals and very high expectations.

With my extensive experience, I am able to outline the requirements of the GCSE course in a way that is simple yet rigorous, ensuring that those I work with are motivated and challenged to achieve their best.

English is a seemingly complex subject, and I personally love the world of possibility created by it. But for those with a more logical mind, there are actually very simple criteria which examiners look for when reviewing a student's work. Once students are equipped with a sound understanding of these expectations, it is actually fairly easy for them to apply these and succeed.
