My name is Dr Jonny Chernick and I'm a GP living in North Manchester. I am a friendly, passionate doctor from Liverpool who completed my undergraduate medical training in 2016. I have an interest in medical law and in 2019 graduated with a relevant LLM with Distinction.
I have many years' experience of teaching medical students and Foundation Doctors, both formally and informally, including as part of their local training programs. I'm renowned for making my teaching fun and interactive, including making a "Who Wants to be a Medical Nerd" gameshow session. I have previously been nominated for a medical student teaching award from Manchester University, and work as an OSCE examiner for Liverpool and Manchester medical schools. I have experience examining and invigilating for the General Medical Council's PLAB2 clinical examinations, and work as a Clinical Debrief Tutor, through the University of Manchester, for third year medical students based in hospitals in and around Manchester.
My belief is that someone must understand a concept in order to apply it in an exam setting, and in their day-to-day professional life. I apply flexible thinking in discussions and often utilise role play to help the student acquire a better grasp of the subject. Having sat through many undergraduate and postgraduate exams, receiving good scores, I understand the importance of solid exam technique and assist with this to help my student achieve their maximum potential. I am competent and confident in delivering excellent tuition in general medical topics alongside medical law and ethics specifically.
Having obtained a distinction in all my legal essays for my LLM, I am able to constructively critique written work and help my students reach their maximum potential in their assignments. I can help with structure and ascerain the strengths of arguments, making suggestions where appropriate to strengthen the flow and crticial analysis of the essay.
I have an interest in medical education, and for the last couple of years have been actively involved in the local Foundation Doctor teaching program. I have consistently achieved very positive feedback with an average overall score of 4.75/5. Some of the written feedback includes the following comments from Foundation Doctors (evidence can be provided):
For the last couple of years, I have provided teaching for local GP Trainees as part of their teaching programme, delivering sessions for AKT revision which has been received highly.
In 2019, I was nominated for a University of Manchester Medical School Student-Led Teacher Award. This recognised the impact I had on the medical students I supervised during my placements; alongside the clinical work I provided them with impromptu small group teaching where possible. I currently deliver small-group teaching for The University of Manchester for third year medical students.
I currently write and edit questions on a freelance basis for a large national question bank (PassMedicine Ltd) for various post-graduate medical tests including the Applied Knowledge Test (AKT) and the Multi-Specialty Recruitment Assessment (MSRA).
