This is how 3 referees rated John:
I hold a BSc (Hons) in Mathematics and a postgraduate Diploma in Management Studies. Since graduation I have worked in the computer software industry all my life, founding my own company in 1983. I sold the company in 2000 and "retired". Since then I have undertaken a number of IT Consultancy assignments, considerable voluntary work for an equine sport and taught Mathematics at GCSE and A Level for many years. I choose to teach Mathematics purely for my love of the subject and my desire to convey this enthusiasm to pupils on a one-to-one basis.
I am not and have never been a full time teacher. I have taught Mathematics at GCSE and A Level privately for the past seven years, achieving good improvements in predicted grades across the board.
My approach to teaching the subject of Mathematics is informal but ensuring that the pupil is focused for the full period of the lesson. I feel that it is important that the pupil understands why they have to learn a particular aspect of the subject as well as the how. This is especially important at A Level. I also focus on examination technique, giving special attention to helping the student maximise the marks that can be achieved on a question. Finally, I am very keen that my lessons should be seen as enjoyable, so will always look to develop a good working relationship with the pupil, so that they feel at ease with me and so are relaxed about asking any question they want, no matter how trivial it might seem.
