Hello my name is Jill and I am a qualified teacher with a wealth of experience.
I am constantly learning and have recently completed a CELTA qualification to teach English to speakers of other languages.
I now live in mid Devon but have travelled extensively in Europe and America.
I have extensive experience of teaching in main stream schools. Over the years I have taught all age groups from 5-18, I enjoyed teaching but now, semi-retired, I find tutoring suits me extremely well. I have been tutoring for the past 7 years and have had much success. I have tutored young people through their GCSE exams, helped children of all ages with English and Maths, focusing on basic skills such as spelling, grammar, times tables, number bonds and mental arithmetic.
Every individual is just that. When I meet a new student we always have an informal discussion about their needs. I have various tools to assess each student. I always ensure that the student understands that I am not going to 'test' them, instead that we are looking at how we can best use our time together. My style is informal and friendly. I truly enjoy what I do and I hope my enthusiasm is contagious.
This year (2018) I have been teaching literacy to two 16 year old students who came to me unable to read. We have made wonderful progress and they are both now able to enjoy reading. One of these students has severe autism, the other is a slow learner. We are all very proud of this achievement.
