Personal Description:

I am a fully qualified maths teacher (11-18) with a BSc in Mathematics. I have been very successful as a teacher and tutor with a wide range of different academic abilities. I offer tutoring to all ages through from Primary school through to degree level. I have a full current DBS (criminal records check). Please note the rates stated are for students living within 5 miles of my address. An additional £5 is charge for those living between 5-10 miles away. For those living further than 10 miles away please feel free to get I touch with your requirements and we can discuss the fee. Tuition is usually one-to-one.

Group session are available if you wish to have a group session with a family member, friend or classmate. These sessions usually take place in one of the pupils homes, sometimes switching from one address to the other on a weekly basis. These sessions are 70 minutes long to allow for one-to-one in the first ten minutes for one pupil and ten minutes at the end for the other. These sessions are almost as good as one-to-one as it is easy to support one student while the other puts in to practice what they have just been taught within the session.

The charges for a 70 minute shared session are £17.50 per pupil for Primary and £20 per pupil for secondary.

I can also rent out rooms by the hour in Leyland and Chorley which adds £10 to the hourly rate if there is no suitable place for tuition at your home.

Tutoring Experience:

I have worked in both secondary schools and secondary schools with sixth forms. I have experience in intervention and one to one tutoring within a high school setting, delivering the intervention sessions in one high school and taking the responsibility of intervention coordinator in another. I have also prepared small groups of pupils for Further/Additional Maths at GCSE Level. I have been very successful in improving under achieving students to achieve their target grade both as a tutor and teacher. As a father I know how important our children achieving their best is to all parents. Recent tutoring successes include a pupil who came to me on a grade F and achieved a grade C in her GCSE exam. A primary school pupil who went on not only to achieve level 5 in her sats but also achieved 44/50 on her level six paper. Successes from the exam results in 2016 include a A level student moving from a E to a B. A GCSE student moving from an F to a C who I started tutoring in February. Another GCSE pupil moving from a C to an A. I have also tutored adults including help on university assignments and individual modules. I am fully up to date with changes in the curriculum both in the new GCSE's (9-1 grades) and the new Primary school SATS.

Tutoring Approach:

I want all my students to be able to develop their understanding of mathematics rather than just learning how to answer a question. I try to work with their class teacher in following the methods they are being taught at school but also realise that different methods may be appropriate if they are struggling. I set homework weekly which is assessed at the start each session unless it is a longer piece or exam paper which is taken away and marked and brought back to the next session. I plan topics which are linked to previous learning in order to develop the bigger picture of mathematics but have excellent subject matter so am able to change my plan if the student wishes to look at another area that might have arisen as a problem in school/college. I also like my students to be proactive and get in touch if they wish to cover a particular topic which wasn't mentioned at the end of the previous session. I have a good relationship with all the people I tutor, they are at ease to ask questions and praise is central to help raise confidence.
