Friendly and enthusiastic junior doctor offering tuition in biology at all levels, medicine and statistics. My medical training gives me a unique perspective on the applications of the biological sciences, which previous tutees have found really helpful for their own learning - as it is always beneficial to think about how any particular concept works in practice.
I also have a masters degree (Distinction) in molecular biology and achieved 'honours' in my medical degree awarded for scoring in the top 10% of my cohort.
I have an enhanced DBS certificate for working with young people and vulnerable adults.
I have over six years experience tutoring students of all ages and abilities, from KS3 science right up to undergraduate degree level. Over this time I have my students achieve the top grades that they needed and deserved in order to access future employment or study.
I have extensive experience in the GCSE and A-Level biology curriculum and can tutor for all major examination boards (OCR, AQA, WJEC etc.). Here's what some of my previous GCSE and A-level students have had to say:
"James has been very helpful with my revision he is very competent in his area and very adaptable to other content furthermore he presents very dry things in an accessible way and has made a huge improvement in my knowledge would recommend!" - Carol
"James explains concepts very clearly and tailors the lesson to what you need and how you learn. I have found the sessions very helpful." - Niamh
"The lesson was exceedingly well planned and informative. James is an energetic and knowledgable tutor anyone can find useful" - James-Hardy
I am also keen to tutor undergraduate students in the biological sciences, pre-clinical medicine and medicine. One recent degree-level student commented:
"Through James' continued support throughout the term, I went from not understanding a word of my psychobiology class to achieving 78% in my exam! I can't recommend James enough" - Lynn (2020)
I principally tutor online through Skype, using interactive online whiteboards this is often the most efficient way of doing things. I can also tutor in person and will travel within reason.
My approach is heavily guided by the individual learner - as no two people learn in quite the same way. My tutorials will follow a loose structure. We will define the aims of the session, proceed to a section of formal teaching delivered by myself, before finishing with some example questions to think about and discuss together. I often set pieces of 'homework' for you to work on in your own time, which I feel is an excellent way to consolidate the tutorial.
I firmly believe that the best way to learn is to teach something to someone else. So, in our sessions, I will encourage you to explain concepts back to me and provide plenty of time for questions and discussion.
