Home Tuition for Maths and English in Blackheath

Experienced, fully qualified teacher offering tutoring in the core knowledge and skills for reading, writing, maths and science. As a full time teacher with fourteen years experience and as a mentor to student teachers on the Goldsmiths PGCE programme, I have extensive expertise in assessing/planning and delivering effective and engaging programmes that identify gaps and stretch and challenge all types of learners. With up to date knowledge of how the curriculum is sequenced from Reception through to GCSE, I can offer robust assessment of where pupils require support and discrete teaching and where they would benefit from deepening and extension work. I know when and how to stretch and challenge learners so that they remain engaged, building a sense of independence in their ability to absorb new skills and concepts. In addition, I offer preparation and skills practise for the 11+ entrance exams for Kent, Bexley and local South East London independent schools. Aside from providing coaching for selective schools, I am passionate about ensuring all learners have the necessary skills, knowledge and habits for learning in order to bridge the gap between primary and secondary education so that they are ready to progress to KS3 and KS4 (GCSE) in the core curriculum subjects of English, Maths and Science.

Tutoring Experience

Fully qualified, experienced teacher with an extensive range of teaching for learning strategies that target potential, gaps and misconceptions. Having taught all ages through primary from Reception to Year 6, I have a deep understanding of the reading, writing and maths knowledge and skills necessary for children to excel across the wider curriculum and progress to secondary education. As a science subject leader, I have an in-depth knowledge of the maths and reasoning skills that sits alongside STEM subjects and the importance of having a solid conceptual foundation in KS1 and KS2 in order to progress to secondary study. In addition, I am an expert phonics teacher who can diagnose the difficulties your child might experience with early reading and writing skills and find an approach to achieve fluency and confidence. With several years experience as a mentor to PGCE teachers from the Institute of Education, Goldsmiths and Greenwich University, I have current knowledge of the latest cognitive research into teaching and learning and how to deploy the most effective strategies.

Tutoring Approach

My practise is rooted in metacognition and the science behind learning. Put simply, this means that learners will be provided with models and the best examples of outcomes for that particularly subject. From this, we unpack how the answer was achieved through an ‘I do, we do, you do’ approach which builds fluency, mastery and long term memory of the concept, skills and knowledge. Through regular practise and revisiting learning in a variety of representations, learners build a solid conceptual understanding of the topic, unit or subject which supports their enjoyment, fulfilment and confidence. As a fully qualified teacher with extensive experience across all ages, I can assess pupils readily in order to plan appropriate interventions and push them on to the next step. Success in secondary requires children to build a broad, rich vocabulary over time in order to be able to move from novice to expert across all subjects. Using cognitive conflict questioning, guided practise and spaced learning, pupils can move through the stages from novice to expert in all core subjects; science and maths literacy is as important as being able to respond and analyse poetry. As children and young people learn to be effective thinkers, they engage in the joy of understanding complex themes and the intrinsic mental rewards and confidence that it brings.
