I am a full time tutor specialising in AQA A level Biology. Tuition may be face to face for local students but for the majority of students will be online via zoom. One to one sessions are student-focused and may involve explanations and understanding of more challenging topics, active revision or looking at how to answer Biology exam questions more effectively to gain more marks. On Tues and Thurs evenings I run year 13 AQA Biology Booster groups aimed at A/A* students (potential medics, vets, dentists etc) or a catch-up group for those students who may be struggling a little with Biology but need a higher grade to get on a chosen course. The group sessions have proved to be effective for students in improving grades and more cost effective for parents. I also offer an exam marking and feedback service and walk through full exam papers in preparation for A level exams . Please ask for further details.
I have been a teacher of Science and Biology for several years in York and Harrogate. Before this I was in industry and have always enjoyed the challenge of making Science relevant to students in terms of everyday applications and career possibilities.
I love nothing more than helping students get to grips with concepts that they find challenging or just approaching exam questions from a different perspective so that they become clear. I have a range of teaching and revision resources to help students revise more effectively and focus on exam techniques in order to help students increase their Biology grade.
I now offer online tuition via Zoom and all A level and GCSE lessons have been adapted to teach online. I can offer face to face or online tuition or a combination, depending on location. The hourly tuition rate includes the setting and marking of exam questions or papers if students wish.
For the past 6 years I have been tutoring full time as well as being an examiner for AQA GCSE and A level exams.
My main experience is in tutoring Biology A level (AQA , OCR and Edexcel Salters) along with Biology and Science GCSE. Prior to this, I taught A level Biology, GCSE and KS3 Science and co-ordinated A level Vocational Science in Secondary schools in York and Harrogate. As an examiner for AQA, I have marked A level and GCSE Biology exams for 15 years, including the new linear A level exams introduced in 2015
I am friendly and approachable but I also make it very clear to students that they need to develop a wide range of skills in order to succeed in Biology A level. I expect students to work hard, challenge themselves and I set homework to to be completed by the following lesson. We work together to develop exam techniques such as interpreting and breaking down challenging questions, structuring answers that gain all the marks, tackling Maths and application questions and writing essays. The aim is to help students gain in confidence and increase academic achievement; they should also develop tenacity and logical skills to improve grades by tackling the most difficult exam questions.
