Jack

Private Maths and Physics Tuition in Holland Park

Educated at Eton, Jack holds two degrees from the University of Cambridge in Natural Sciences (Physics and Materials Science). He has mentored over 40 students in the last 6 years.

His academic repetoire ranges from 11+ to 2nd year University in STEM-based subjects. For University admissions he has partnered with world-leading Oxbridge specialists Upgrade Consulting.

Alongside exam and admissions focussed tuition, Jack also offers broader mentoring. A dedicated polymath, he delights in this renaissance-style tuition: an intellectual adventure unfettered by strictures of classroom or exam hall. He has mentored clients in chess, computer programming, and artificial intelligence; opera, ballet, and vinyl DJing; art history, architecture, and culture.

Jack develops a hunger for learning in his clients. This is an asset for life: and one that naturally compounds, cannot be stolen or taxed, and (uniquely) makes everything more interesting. His students gain enthusiasm for the world, discovering how full of beauty and opportunity it is. Jack equips them with the skills and confidence to add their own imprint.

Background

At Eton, Jack won prestigious prizes in Science, English Language, Literature and Maths. He received 11A*s at GCSE and 4A*s at A level in Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Further Maths. Cambridge offered him a place to read Natural Sciences at Queens', the college both his grandfather and great-grandfather attended.

At University Jack studied Physics and Maths, specialising into Material and Condensed Matter Physics. During his Masters degree he developed a record-breaking Machine Learnign algorithm to analyse lithium-ion batteries. He was awarded the Armours and Brasiers prize in 2020 and now works as a data engineer for a tech consultancy.

As a recent graduate, Jack is acutely aware of the pressures of school and university life. His proximity to that time enables him to empathise and connect with students more directly.

Tutoring Experience

Jack began tutoring full-time in 2016 for Clarendon Tutors. He continued freelance throughout his time at Cambridge. Since moving to London for work, he has maintained this part-time balance. After several successes Jack was approached by Upgrade Consultancy (the world leader in top-tier university admissions). He partnered with them in 2022 to make use of their expertise and help deal with his capacity constraints. As part of the partnership, Jack was installed as CTO, taking over technical responsibilities.

Jack has taught a wide range of subjects, including:
- Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Combined Science
- Materials Science, Computer Science, Non-Verbal Reasoning
- English Language, English Literature, Verbal Reasoning
- History, Latin, Ancient Greek

His students have gained admission and scholarships to the following institutions:
- Cambridge, Oxford, Princeton, Harvard
- Eton, Westminster, Harrow, Wycombe Abbey
- King's Grantham, Oakham and Oundle.

He has experience at a range of levels, from 11+ non-verbal reasoning preparation to explaining Special Relativity to Oxbridge physicists (but needs forewarning for the latter!).

Tutoring Approach

The old cliche clamours: no two students are alike. However, Jack's clients can broadly be represented by 3 archetypes:
(1) Zuleika wants broad, renaissance-style tuition: an intellectual and cultural adventure. She will be moulded into a flourishing young adult with multitudinous interests and a passion for life.
(2) Yossarian requires rapid improvement of his grades. Jack must take him on an intensive crash course, cynically optimising exam technique to maximise test scores.
(3) Xerxes needs supplementation. Perhaps he has a teacher that drains enthusiasm; or he has lost confidence after falling a few places in class; or he is under-stimulated and needs to be stretched beyond the syllabus. He may want to revise or cover new ideas for the first time.

Jack believes the best teachers have three things in common.
(1) They have high standards. Students test teachers to see if they can get away with low-quality work. They respect teachers who call them out for it.
(2) They like their students. Kids can tell very accurately whether or not someone wishes them well. They engage with teachers that want them to flourish.
(3) They are interested in their subjects. Enthusiasm is contagious, and so is boredom.

Consistent across the three students is Jack's obsession with how each student learns. In every session he seeks solidified understanding; that moment where multiple pieces click together. Chasing this heurestic prioritises confidence and enjoyment, and therefore long-term engagement. Self-sustaining increased ability is the inevitable and delightful side-effect of this approach.

Jack's first session is a mutual assessment. He evaluates the student's suitability for tuition, their situation and attitude, ability and goals. This allows him to formulate a plan. In turn the client decides whether the pairing is compatible and if the relationship can flourish. If both parties are satisfied at their suitability for collaboration, they can agree on what direction is required.

Transport

To provide unrivalled response times, Jack took lessons to obtain a full motorcycle license. He now races through London on his 650cc Royal Enfield, reacting rapidly to his clients' needs. He also travels abroad for bespoke arrangements.
