Jack offers a FREE first / introductory lesson!
Specializing in English literature and language (from GCSE to degree level), I offer personalized tuition to students in and around Brighton. I hold a PhD in the subject (as well as a BA and MA) and have taught English at the University of Sussex and Brighton, in addition to providing one-to-one tuition. I have recent experience of helping students prepare for exams across various syllabuses and exam boards (including Edexcel and AQA). I have also taught Drama at university level.
Please ask for my current availability, but I am generally free most week-day evenings and can likely fit in with your schedule. I find it helps to discuss tuition informally before committing so do ask if you have any questions (however small). References, DBS check and proof of qualifications are available on request.
I have recent experience of tutoring English students across various levels and exam boards. I am currently helping several school and college-age students with exam preparation; I have also taught at university level, leading groups of undergraduates in seminar discussions. As well as discussing and analysis literary texts with students, I have taught "workshop" classes focused on study skills, which encouraged reflection on working methods (e.g. planning an argument, writing clear, lucid prose) in order to proactively improve students` results.
At the University of Sussex I gained an additional semester of co-teaching experience, which allowed me to learn from an experienced lecturer. This formed part of the English Lecturer Training Programme, a year-long course in which we explored and practiced various pedagogical methods.
Each session can be tailored to students` needs and to specific exam boards, on the basis of past papers and the relevant specifications. My tuition can address particular concerns, such as writing skills, reading comprehension, or analysing texts, but also contribute to more general objectives like building confidence and positive engagement in the subject.
I`m friendly and attentive in person, and I hope my tuition reflects my enthusiasm for reading, writing and literature, while being sensitive to students who need patient help with work they might be struggling with. I approach teaching in a conscientious manner, preparing thoroughly for each session. I enjoy tutoring and particularly seeing students improve over successive sessions.
