I am a university student going into my second year of studies at the University of Warwick. I am studying Economics, Politics and International Studies. I was born in India but brought up in Nairobi, Kenya my whole life before moving to the UK for university. For my A-levels, I took Maths, Economics, Biology and Chemistry. I am confident to teach these subjects at GCSE/Secondary level and can teach maths A-level.
During highschool, I used to stay after school to tutor younger kids in our schol. This was voluntary, so not a paid job. There was usually a group of 4-5 students and we would pick a topic prior to the day and discuss it together, and do exam-style questions at the end. I also recently went to Ghana for 4 weeks to teach maths in the local schools. We taught years 7, 8 and 9. This helped me learn new styles of teaching and also how to handle bigger groups of students as in the past it was always either one-on-one sessions or groups of not more than 7. Prior to this, I was given a training for 5 days about effective teaching styles and techniques which I implemented during my teaching and also came up with some new ones.
I usually like to meet with my students first to understand the level they are at, and note down all the units/topics they would like to cover during the tutoring sessions. This way, I can prepare for them in advance and also get some exam-style questions for them to try at the end of each topic.
