Hi! I’m a friendly, patient, and fun person, with a love of languages ancient and modern. I’ve lived in France for six years, as well as lots of other European cities during a long career in finance. I have an Oxford degree in Classics and Modern Languages, and CELTA certificate in English as a Foreign Language.
I’m rather new to tutoring (September 2017) and just beginning to build up a group of pupils. I coached my own son (now in his twenties) to A* levels in Latin, Greek, and Italian GCSEs, and I gave several lectures at his school about careers in languages. In the past, I’ve also worked as a language assistant at a secondary school in Italy.
Different subjects need different approaches: in modern languages (including EFL) the emphasis is on self-expression, listening, understanding, writing, and for advanced students, getting to know and appreciate the culture and literature. For the classics, it’s all about learning to love the structure of language, the grammar and, of course, later on, some of the most fantastic literature ever written!
