I am married with three adult daughters and having taught English for 19 years as well as Film Studies for 5 years, I am now a student taking a Masters in Literary Studies.
My first degree is in English with History. I taught for 19 years in two schools. I also introduced and was in charge of GCSE and A Level Film Studies in my last school. I have extensive experience of many exam boards, having been an examiner for English and Literature GCSE, A level and the International Baccalaureate for the last 17 years. I tutor at all levels, from Scotland to India, face to face and online, GCSE to the IB in English Language and Literature, as well as adult tuition for those who wish to gain the English qualification in preparation for teacher training. All of my tutees have been successful, my last IB tutee gaining a Level 7 in English and my 2018 A level tutee moving up to the grade he needed for university.
I believe my empathic approach to a tutee is a key characteristic of my approach. Making good relationships with students is vital in encouraging their growth of confidence. A successful teacher/tutor cares about their students and wants them to feel they can approach their exams knowing exactly what they must do to achieve highly. My depth of subject knowledge and very wide experience of examining ensures that a tutee will feel reassured that they are in safe hands and will be patiently, but enthusiastically guided towards their goals. My lessons are exceptionally well prepared and resourced. I ensure that my tutees are provided with comprehensive revision resources that are tailored to their individual needs. I hold a current DBS certificate which I am happy to provide on request.

Jack had been drifting along with his studying but after Hilary started teaching him he began to work hard. Hilary has enormous energy and works to hard tailoring her teaching to the individual needs. I would say that she put as much work into the lessons as the boys did afterwards. Her example encouraged them.
There is no doubt that her help with Jack at A level made an enormous difference to the outcome and Jack obtained the grade he needed to get into his first choice university.
My only regret was that we did not find Hilary sooner. I would recommend getting her started ideally at the beginning of the A level course in year 12 but certainly no later than the beginning of year 13.
I can highly recommend her.
