Helen

Hi! My name is Helen and I’m passionate about Maths, Data and Education. I am currently tutoring a number of children in Mathematics at KS2, KS3 and KS4 (GCSE) level. I’ve become a tutor because I’m finding that many very capable children are doing less well in Maths than other subjects and this shouldn’t be the case. I am fully confident that everyone can be good at Maths, and I want to help children (and adults!) become confident and fluent, building skills for life.
My background is in Maths, Statistics and IT having gained a BSc Hons in Mathematics and Statistics, then more recently a Distinction in MSc Data Science (the science behind Artificial Intelligence) at City University. I have 25+ successful years in various Maths and Data-related roles in the UK Government and later in Industry. I’ve strong links with Education, having volunteered in local Primary schools, been a STEM Ambassador and ran Code Clubs. I’m a member of the Maths Association and actively promote the Maths competitions run by the UK MT.

Tutoring Experience

I am currently helping my tutees with a range of goals including general improvement, KS2 SATs practice, entrance exams, moving up a set in Secondary School, and working towards a good grade in the GCSE exam.

Tutoring Approach

I teach with understanding and mastery, ensuring first that the key building blocks are present. Different teaching methods (visual, practical, process) appeal to different people so I use a variety of methods to see which work for each tutee. Grounding those key mathematical concepts with visualisations is extremely effective.
I make an initial assessment and depending on the goals of the tutee I will form a scheme of work. I like to set homework if this is acceptable, and I give regular feedback. This helps to build confidence and demonstrate the progress being made.
