Stoke-on-Trent Tutor

I have a passion for teaching and am a creative, experienced English Native tutor and trainer. I graduated with a 2:1 Joint Honours Degree in English and Psychology from Keele University in 1990 and am a qualified Adult Education tutor delivering ESOL and introduction to psychology courses. I began my career working in the NHS as a psychologist helping individuals and running groups on confidence-building and stress management. I have also worked as a mentor and tutor to university and college students. A key strength for my English tuition or coaching is an ability to form good working relationships with learners or clients built on mutual trust and rapport. I provide face to face or skype sessons for distance learners.

Tutoring Experience

Since 2005 I have taught English classes and individual sessions to International students and adults of all nationalities, ages and levels. I have taught at British Council accredited English Language summer schools based at Keele, Staffordshire, Sussex and Oxford Brookes Universities, Roedean School Brighton and Cheshire College South and West. I have overseen placement tests in written and oral skills that students sit on arrival to the UK, in order to assign them into one of 4 levels from elementary to upper intermediate and have conducted end of course tests. In class the focus is on improving oral fluency and confidence in speaking as well as written work. Students learn through doing a variety of projects, role play activities and presentations. I offer English tuition to post graduate International students and professionals either living and working in the UK (doctors, pharmacists, business people and journalists) or via skype. I have taught Adult ESOL classes at college where I had a 98% pass rate for learners taking entry level ESOL exams.

Tutoring Approach

I have a coaching approach to tutoring which is always positive and encouraging. Students have commented that I know how to motivate them to improve and build language skills. It is important to teach confidence so that students feel relaxed and unafraid about using language. I am flexible and can adapt and tailor the lessons to what students require. Students may want to practise conversational English on a range of topics or improve pronunciation and build vocabulary related to their career or work. I can help students working towards ESOl or other exams or improve their IELTS score. I can offer proof reading for academic work for a university degree.
