I'm currently pursuing a BA in English and French at the University of Oxford, having graduated school with 4A*s at A Level and straight A*s at GCSE.
I'm keen to share the passion I have for education and learning with tutees. I can offer you online English and Language based classes, as well as any help with University preparation—whether this be entrance exams, interview practice, personal statements, or just advice in general!
Alongside my tutees on FirstTutors, I've had experience with assisting in teaching English and basic arithmetic in primary school classrooms. I have also tutored GCSE pupils at secondary schools in GCSE English Language and Literature, as well as study skills and exam preparation. These students went on to achieve straight passes in their GCSEs, compared to all fails in their previous mock exams. I am also trained in ESL, with a Level 5 Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL).
I can provide a DBS check, upon request.
I always prioritise building a good relationship with tutees—classrooms don't usually have the best connotations for students, but simply making the learning environment more enjoyable and interactive, through a relaxed and informal setting, can make a world of difference. I set targets for my tutees and implementable ways to consolidate their academic progress both within and beyond the classroom. Most importantly, I don't dish out a cookie-cutter educational experience: each tutee has their own strengths and weaknesses, and I tailor each lesson to these specific needs.
My fee includes not only the hour of teaching itself, but also a lot of work outside that hour - lesson planning (this includes creating learning material for that specific student) and marking homework. I always provide feedback on any work they've done outside of the lesson. At the end of every month I write up a report for each student describing their progress and any goals I've established for them moving forward. Every student should feel heard and understood.
For ESL and French, I use authentic materials to make learning as immersive as possible; for English, I focus on not only strengthening the pupil's understanding of the language, but also deconstructing texts and providing critical responses to given stimulus pieces. My aim is to teach how to truly read a text.
When I was in school I was often frustrated by teachers who didn't seem to want to inspire their students, providing barely structured and minimal-effort lessons. I don't believe in teaching without passion: teaching is about cultivation, and about recognising the responsibility of shaping a pupil's conception of the world around them. My goal is to help you.
