Gwilym

I am a retired Local Government Officer with an Honours Degree in Civil Engineering. I passed the Professional Examination in 1981 to become a Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers, and thereby, a Chartered Engineer. I now retain retired membership of the Institution. I have always lived in Gwynedd, apart from my time at University, and my first language is Welsh. Consequently, I can offer tuition in both Welsh and English

Tutoring Experience

I had tutored occasionally on a one to one basis since graduating in 1973, and have done so regularly since 2003. Over the years, I have helped a number of students to gain a C grade or better in their GCSE examination. I also tutored in the local class of the national organization, Extra Curricula Maths from 2003 to 2009, when the franchisees closed the class to concentrate on their private company offering one to one tuition.
Between 2006 and 2008, I tutored student nurses for their numeracy examination in the first year of their degree course. Those students, who had not gained a grade C or better in their GCSE Mathematics examination were required to gain an 80% pass mark to continue with the course. Some of these adult students were married and had families, and none had done any numerical calculations since sitting their GCSE examinations. I tutored six such students who succeeded in the examination.

Tutoring Approach

For the first session, I ask that a student brings along their exercise books to enable me to see what he/she has done and is currently doing, and to assess with what he/she is having difficulty. I would set the student an exercise to do on their own at home, and try to get it back to mark before the second session. This allows me to go through the completed exercise with the student, and help him/her to correct any mistakes and tackle any unattempted questions. With GCSE students, I set them past papers to attempt on their own, and go through the completed papers after marking. Additional exercises on subjects that need to be improved on are also given. This method seems to have worked with all the students I have tutored.
