Greg

I am an experienced teacher and school leader. My own children are studying A levels and GCSEs, so I have strong empathy for supporting students (and parents!). I have a Master's Degree in Education and have undertaken research into what helps pupils learn and how to improve their retention of learning, using memory techniques. Working at international, day and special needs schools has given me wide and varied experience to support all types of student, in ways which suits them. Prior to becoming a teacher I worked as a scientist in industry, so I have a "real world" view of education and the world of work. I believe the learning experience is just as important as the result and I take time to get to know my students, to give them the best possible learning outcomes. During term time I am available evenings and weekends (weekdays too, during school holidays).

Tutoring Experience

With more than 25 years in education, I have been a subject, phase and school leader at independent and international schools, teaching Science to Key Stage 3 and Biology to BTEC, GCSE and A level. I have taught academic students in preparation for University entrance and also SEN students, to help them pass their BTEC, GCSE and A level examinations. I am very experienced in coaching students to understand and feel more comfortable about sitting examinations, unlocking the questions with simple methods and tools. I have 5 years teaching experience online and have taught students privately for more than 20 years. My former students have progressed to become doctors, vets, teachers, marine biologists and many other interesting professionals! I can help with UCAS applications and Personal Statements for University admissions, on request. I can also support students undertaking the EPQ. All my A level students gained A and B grades Summer 2022, and I had a 100% A to C pass rate in 2023.

Tutoring Approach

I am patient, enthusiastic, clear, organised and structured. I take into account each student's individual needs, linguistic background and preferred learning style. I provide online links, videos, quizzes, examination questions and other resources to reinforce each tutoring session. I have undertaken research into what helps pupils learn and how to improve their retention of learning, using memory techniques. Whether you are a highly academic student or young person with specific learning needs, there is always a way to learn better and learn smart, with methods to suit you. Learning should also be fun!
