Personal Description:

I teach A level Philosophy and can also offer tuition in Education Studies and in English Literature. I am currently a Teaching Fellow at the University of Bath, teaching Philosophy of Education and Language and Learning courses. I have co-written several English coursebooks (published by OUP). I have been an Examiner for A Level English Literature. Philosophy (AQA) and for AS Level Critical Thinking (OCR), and for Education Studies at undergraduate level and postgraduate levels. I also offer university interview practice and advice on UCAS statements. I tutor at home and do not travel to students' homes. I live in Bristol (near the Downs) and am married, with two grown-up sons. I am a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

Tutoring Experience:

I was for many years Head of an English and Drama Faculty. I have also taught Philosophy in Adult Education classes and Philosophy and Education Studies at university level. As an experienced sixth form tutor, I can offer advice on university applications. Testimonials are available; please also check Feedback on this site. I currently teach at the University of Bath and have taught previously at Bath Spa University and UCL Institute of Education.

Tutoring Approach:

I will start by establishing what the student already knows and understands. Understanding will be carefully monitored throughout. Help will be given with essay writing and exam technique. Essays and practice exam answers will be marked and annotated in detail, using the exam board mark schemes. Lessons will normally be informal and discussion-based rather than lectures, and will often be backed by a handout or on-line resource. I am an experienced, tactful, good-humoured, professional teacher.
