I offer tuition in A level Philosophy and in A Level English Literature.

My academic specialism is in the intersections of philosophy, literature and education. I have published academic articles and co-written several English course-books and anthologies (published by OUP).

I have been an Examiner for A Level English Literature. A Level Philosophy (AQA) and for AS Level Critical Thinking (OCR), and for Education Studies modules at undergraduate and postgraduate level, including Philosophy of Education.

I live in Bristol (near the Downs). I am married, with two grown-up sons. I am a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, a school governor and a member of several academic societies.

Tutoring Experience

I was for many years Head of an English and Drama Faculty in a secondary academy. I have also taught Philosophy in Adult Education classes and Philosophy and Education Studies at university level. As an experienced sixth form tutor, and, more recently as a university Director of Studies, I can offer advice on university applications.

Until recently I taught at the University of Bath, where I was a Director of Studies. I taught previously at the UCL Institute of Education .

Tutoring Approach

I will start by establishing what the student already knows and understands. Understanding and knowledge will be carefully monitored throughout. I can help with essay writing and exam skills. Sessions will normally be discussion-based rather than lectures, and will sometimes be backed by a handout or on-line resource.

I am an experienced, professional teacher. My preference is for 90 minute in-person sessions (£50). Other discounts may apply, depending on circumstances.
