Hello! My name is Giovanna. I was born and raised in Italy. When I was 19 I left home to study first in the United States (California) and then in the UK (London). I greatly enjoy tutoring people of all ages and backgrounds and truly believe this type of work enriches both myself and my tutees. An enthusiastic student, I learnt about languages, cultures, history, and art from all over the world and am passionate about passing on my knowledge and acquiring new information through my tutoring. I am a versatile individual and can easily adapt my teaching methods depending on the different academic goals and needs of each student.

Tutoring Experience

  • Language tutoring (Italian): I have tutored one student who was taking an intensive Italian course at University level and was expected to reach level 3 (out of 5) with her final exam within about 2 months from the start of the course. I have also volunteered to teach Italian to groups of 3-5 people through the University College London Union Italian Association. In addition, I am currently tutoring an adult student learning the language for personal interest.
  • Language tutoring (English): I have tutored mostly children between 8 and 14 years of age through my volunteering work at the Associazione "Il Germoglio" (Mantua, Italy). I have also helped students prepare for University English exams at the Università di Verona (Italy).
  • Math tutoring: in the past, I have tutored children between 8 and 14 years of age on a weekly basis, helping them with their homework and assisting them preparing for tests.
  • History, History of Art, Study Skills: while studying for both of my BA degrees and my MA degree I have often helped classmates or less-experienced students prepare for examinations, presentations, etc. in these subjects

Tutoring Approach

I believe the tutoring methods should be adjusted depending on a student's preferred way of learning (we all learn differently, some styles appeal more to a person than others) and on the student's goals. Someone preparing for an academic examination typically has a different attitude to studying, a different schedule and needs to learn different notions compared to someone who is learning for personal interest. The method of tutoring obviously also changes depending on the subject. I certainly always try to include the student's personal interests in the lessons as much as possible, which usually succeeds in stimulating their attention and efforts more. This said, as I mentioned, each student is different and therefore the goals and learning habits will be discussed with each student before the first tuition session.
