I am a fully qualified teacher and SENCo with over 25 years of experience. I work with primary age children who need help to catch up with their reading, writing and mathematical skills. Currently, I am working online via Face Time or Zoom. Many of my students have transferred to this and actually prefer it this way. I have a post graduate diploma (OCR) for assessing and identifying specific learning difficulties (dyslexia) and use these assessments where useful to target my teaching to each individual child.

Tutoring Experience

I have been working as a home tutor for 10 years, since taking early retirement. I spent 25 years as a class teacher, SENCo and as a specialist SEN teacher and have completed several post graduate courses. I now enjoy working with individual children tailoring the lesson to suit their specific needs. Most of my children stay with me for some considerable time. I can supply many references.

Tutoring Approach

I have spent my teaching career working with children who find it difficult to process information or to retain what they have learned. I believe it is important to teach to an individual's preferred learning style, interests and strengths, breaking the lessons up into smaller sections in order to achieve maximum concentration. I use many resources including word cards, games and ICT programmes to engage the learner. Praise and encouragement builds self-esteem and leads to those delightful 'Oh....I get it!' moments.
I like to begin the process with an initial free and no obligation consultation with a parent and child. It is useful to discuss with the child their perceived strengths and weaknesses and to establish the best starting point for lessons. This helps the child to feel at ease and involved with their own learning. At the request of my clients, at the beginning of the Covid lockdown, I started to teach online via Face Time (and Zoom). This has been more successful than I expected and much appreciated by parents while the schools were closed.
I have decided that for the foreseeable future I will continue to offer online lessons only via Face Time and Zoom.
