Maths and English Teacher in York

Hi! I'm Eva, an experienced primary school teacher based just outside the centre of York - I'm ideally situated for anyone attending Bootham or St Peter's schools.

I left teaching in the summer of 2020 to start my own business, but found that I was really missing working with children, so I made the decision to take up tutoring. I know there are a lot of children in need of extra support after the last couple of years and I'm keen to help however I can, whether that's filling gaps in their knowledge or just giving them a confidence boost so they can enjoy learning again.

I have a primary PGCE from Durham University, as well as a first class honours BA in English and Related Literature from the University of York.

Tutoring Experience

I am a qualified, experienced primary school teacher, having taught full time across both Key Stage 1 and 2 for 5 years. I did many training courses during my teaching career on topics such as maths mastery, teaching through drama, growth mindset and more. I have taught subjects across the curriculum and been an English subject coordinator.

I have plenty of experience working with children with a wide range of special educational needs, including dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia and ASD.

Tutoring Approach

My strategy as a teacher has always been to get to know each child as an individual and then tailor my teaching as much as possible to suit them. Do they need to handle physical objects to help them understand new concepts in maths? Do they remember information better if you put it into a story or a song? What will make them feel quickly frustrated, and what's the best way to get them smiling again if they're getting frazzled? I've always enjoyed problem solving, so I'm constantly asking myself, if they don't understand it that way, what else can we try? I love to be as creative as possible, and it's always worth it when you can practically see that light bulb turn on over their heads when they get it!

I love that one-to-one tutoring gives me the opportunity to adapt all of my teaching to how your child's mind works - both in terms of how they learn best, and what they find fun.

Please note that I travel everywhere on foot so I'm only able to come to your home if you live within about a mile of me. If you live further away then I am very happy to welcome you and your child into my home.
