Personal Description:

I am an experienced, enthusiastic and versatile teacher, keen to impart learning to others. In the 1980s I developed a passion for computer programming whilst at secondary schooI. I graduated with an honours degree in Mathematics and its Applications from Cardiff University (1991) with Pure & Applied Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Programming being key components of the degree. On returning to London I enrolled on a PGCE course in secondary education and completed this, obtaining Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in 1992.

Tutoring Experience:

I taught numerous subjects in S. London & Kent secondary and primary schools during the 1990s. In 1996 I helped to found a small independent primary school, developing and delivering its curriculum, including Maths, Eng, Sci, Hist, Geog, Music, Art & PE. I assumed a headteacher position in 2004. Today, I head an out-of-school, tutoring and home school centre teaching mainly primary students, but also secondary and adults in a range of areas including entrance tests in Mathematics, English and Reasoning for entrance to Year 7. Additionally, I am an experienced computer programmer (incl. Microsoft Small BASIC and Flash Scripting), graphic designer and facilitate workshops for small groups of primary/secondary aged children. I have experience with children and adults with Dyslexia and in tutoring teachers to pass numeracy tests for QTS.

Tutoring Approach:

I understand that people being "unique" is not a cliche and therefore start my relationships with students and parents through listening and dialogue as would a medical doctor. I offer a step-by-step approach to the subject matter, but with an ability to determine if a change or departure from structure is required to keep the student moving towards a goal. Targets are very important, whatever the size of the task at hand. Patience is always employed. Life examples are used to develop understanding. A stress on the importance of knowing the definitions of words, regardless of the subject, is paramount as misunderstandings delay progress.

NB: All in-person tutoring is conducted on-site at my educational setting in the Loughborough Junction area. Online tuition (e.g. via Skype) is also provided subject to discussions. Unfortunately I do not travel to tutees' homes at present.
