Private Online English and English (Foreign Language) Tutor

I currently work at Boston High School as an English teacher and Specialist Learning Mentor in English. My work involves teaching whole classes and small groups of students who are struggling with GCSE English Language and Literature. In addition, I work with students for whom English is a second/additional language, in order to improve their levels of attainment.
I have worked in education for over 15 years, specialising in English Langauge and Literature, Special Educational Needs (particularly Dyslexia and Asperger Syndrome). Two years ago I had the responsibility of teaching a Year 7 class with the aim of improving their grades.
I have a 2:3 Honours degree in English language from the Open University and have been privately tutoring students for the past 8 years.

Tutoring Experience

I currently work with students across KS3 & 4 (although I work more closely with GCSE students), running intervention sessions (alongside normal curriculum lessons), which focus on extending their classroom knowledge and areas of concern. Additionally, I am trained in teaching students for whom English is not their first language and I am timetabled to take intervention sessions for students within my school who are struggling. My previous position was at Spalding Grammar School where I was the Lead Teaching Assistant, specialising in English; I worked closely with the English department and also ran after school intervention sessions for students that were struggling.

Tutoring Approach

I believe in being friendly and approachable and getting to know the tutee and their needs. This enables the tutoring to be tailored to individual requirements at a pace that suits that particular person. Some tutees respond well to working through written questions in a methodical way, whereas others prefer a more verbal discussion first. Each tutee will require different results from their session and it is vital this is discussed at the first tutorial.
