I am a Cambridge graduate and a highly successful and experienced teacher of English, specialising in exam preparation for GCSE and A Level. I build my students' confidence and ability, guiding them to surpass their own expectations.
I am a full-time tutor and I only take on a small cohort of students every year. This allows me to give all my attention to my students, including a minimum of one hour of personalised lesson preparation, assessment and written feedback for every hour taught. Parents and students will no longer be in the dark about progress as my weekly reports reveal all.
Few tutors offer such a level of service and my rate reflects my knowledge, my experience and the amount of work I do in the background to guide my students to success!
I have tutored many students all over the world via the internet, leveraging the possibilities provided by live video chat, document sharing and digital apps to achieve excellent success rates.
I have a clean enhanced DBS disclosure.
I have ten years of teaching and tutoring experience in the UK and abroad. Success stories include:
- a tutee whose GCSE English Language grade rose from a 2 to a 7;
- a tutee, struggling with GCSE English Language, whose grade rose from a 3 to a 7;
- a tutee, who found writing problematic, who then trebled her marks for exam writing and whose grade rose from a 4 to a 7.
Naturally, students who had longer courses of tuition (12 to 24 months) progressed furthest. I therefore strongly recommend a minimum of one academic year of exam tuition.
My sessions are strongly goal orientated. The end product (ie the exam) is our focus and is always kept in view.
In a typical session I set an exam reading task and teach strategies for reading and note-taking under time pressure. I then ask the student to write an answer (or part answer) under timed conditions before suggesting improvements by working through sample answers and mark schemes.
Timed homework (usually writing) is always set and forms the beginning of the next session.
I make use of a full range of learning resources – past papers, sample essays, textbooks, digital apps, reference works – as well as my own wealth of knowledge.
I work to help the student develop a series of simple 'messages' and writing models designed to be memorised and repeated, that they can then use to help guide their independent work – especially when alone in an exam.
I am flexible and responsive. I choose the approach that works best, changing and adapting where necessary. I work to build trust between myself, students and parents, encouraging students to achieve their maximum potential.
Thus, through intensive work – writing, reading and discussion – and immediate constructive feedback on what needs to be improved, the students gain confidence in their new knowledge and skills.
I get results.
