I am married and have four children. Having helped them through their education I am very aware of how individuals need support for different reasons while they progress through school. I enjoy excellent health and lead a full life. I have retired from classroom teaching and welcome the opportunity to provide others with the individual help I was able to give my own children. I am Irish but have lived in Merseyside/Lancashire for most of my life.
Although I began my teaching career in Northern Ireland most of my teaching has been in Merseyside, in secondary schools, both grammar and comprehensive. Some 20 years ago, in order to ensure the preparation I was providing for my GCSE French students was suitably focused I sought a position as an examiner and was almost immediately promoted to senior examiner, a role which has enriched my teaching. I also work as a visiting examiner for A-level French speaking tests. I also worked at Edge Hill University for one year as a part-time lecturer for postgraduate Spanish students.
I believe that tutors need to be approachable and friendly as people learn best in a relaxed atmosphere. Above all it needs to stem from the tutees needs.Tutors need to be flexible in their approach and use a variety of resources. This is particularly true in languages where development of listening and speaking are at least as important as reading and writing. Tutors need an in-depth knowledge of the requirements of different examination boards.
