Personal Description:

I am currently completing a Masters Degree in Architectural Conservation and will set up private practice as a historic building consultant. I trained as a valuation surveyor and worked for several years in private practice in South Lancashire. I qualified as a secondary teacher of history in 1988 and taught for 8 years in a large comprehensive school on Merseyside.

Tutoring Experience:

After gaining my BA(Hons) in History in 1987 i qualified as a teacher a year later. I taught history and economics to both GCSE and A level, and also contributed to a variety of courses such as politics and law working with sixth form students on the latter courses. I worked as a private tutor for ten years throughout the 1990's only stopping due to work committments whilst working in an educational advisory capacity for a regional TEC and the construction industry. Until recently i worked for a large local authority as an advisor and project coordinator in adult learning. I am beginning study towards a Masters in History at Lancaster commencing September 2015,and also completing my dissertation for a MSc in Architectural as well as continuing my tuition work.

Tutoring Approach:

At KS3/4 using curriculum as guidance working with the students developing their understanding of the core requirements of units studied and the broad aims of the course they are studying. I also work on basic examination technique using past papers to assist in preparation for subsequent examinations. I encourage students to express ideas and apply their knowledge to the requirements of the courses being studied. At KS5 i use tutorials to assess gaps in knowledge and understanding and adopt strategies to address issues raised, encouraging individuals to begin approaching their studies in a methodical and pragmatic manner with a view to broadening their core knowledge and achieving success in examinations.
