Daryl

Daryl

I am an LSE graduate in BSc Accounting and Finance and have also obtained postgraduate qualifications in Statistics, I am currently a dedicated and passionate full-time tutor, I am passionate about my subjects and dedicated to seeing students do well.

I was privileged enough to be afforded a very good private education and originally decided to take on tutoring as an opportunity to share my knowledge with others and allow them to realise their full potential and all the other benefits of a good education.

I have over 80 reviews from past clients and several signed references as evidence of my capabilities. These are not viewable on this profile due to the fact that this website only allows reviews from clients gotten from their website, whereas many of mine come from other sources. However these will be available for you to view at our first meeting.

Five main factors have contributed to my success so far,

- I have high expectations of myself and my students, I believe every student can achieve the best grades with the right help

  • I instil confidence and a "can do" attitude in students, regularly reminding them that nothing is "hard" if you have been shown how to do it properly

  • I listen to students, this keeps lessons interactive and ensures I have constant updates on their thought process and current understanding

  • I am relatively young so students feel comfortable engaging with me and enjoy learning from me

  • I ensure continuous support for students, I make myself available for questions via phone or e-mail throughout the day to ensure the support does not end at the end of the lesson!

Tutoring Experience

Career Highlights!

  • Academic Year 2011 - 2012 I helped a student who was predicted a C grade at GCSE to achieve a coveted place at Eltham College after passing a difficult 16+ exam

  • Academic year 2012 - 2013 I helped a student who scored a D grade at AS Economics achieve an A grade at A2 level after 8 months of tuition. He was the only student to score an A grade in his school since 2007.

  • Academic Year 2013 - 2014 I helped a student who scored a C grade at AS Economics achieve an A grade at A2 Economics with an impressive 97% in Unit 1, 99% in Unit 2 and 100% in Unit 3. He had also had three previous tutors who he was dissatisfied with before coming to me.

  • Academic Year 2015 - 2016 I helped a student who achieved a B at AS improve to an A* in Edexcel Economics

  • Academic Year 2016 - 2017 I helped a student with mild learning difficulties improve from an E at AS Economics to a B in A2 AQA Economics. This was his highest grade across his two years of A-level studies.

  1. Kiersha H - Economics A- level

Fantastic tutor!

I was tutored by Daryl for 2 years in economics for my alevels and the amount it improved my understanding and writing skills was huge! He was so helpful and made sure I was perfectly ready for exams with the depth of exam preparation. I received an A grade at both AS level and then an A grade at Alevel and I am certain I wouldn't have achieved them without his help because when he taught me I really noticed the gaps I previously had in my knowledge. He was also very helpful when it came to me applying to do economics at uni and gave me some great help with doing my personal statement!

  1. Dustin K - Economics A-level

Best Economics Tutor I have ever worked with!

I first started working with Daryl for my economics a level and he was able to competently explain and clarify ever area of the course. With him I managed to move my grade from a C to A. So thanks again Daryl. Daryl was also able to help me after my a level with my university essays and demonstrated a clear understanding of marketing at an undergraduate level. I can only recomend working with Daryl as he is a competent intelegent young tutor who understands each individual students needs

  1. Sam I - iGCSE Mathematics

Great tutor and role model, Jack achieved an A* despite being predicted a B!

My son Jack had maths igcse tutoring from Daryl leading up to his exams this year. Jack really enjoyed working with Daryl and I think because of his manner Jack felt confident to ask all those questions he was too embarrassed to ask in front of his class! This meant he really focused on what he was struggling with. Daryl was always really helpful and gave great advice, so much so that we changed Jack's A Level choices to Maths. I would have no hesitation in recommending Daryl in the future and hopefully can call upon him again not only for Jack but for my daughter when the time comes.

  1. Avril S

Outstanding private tutor and an incredible role model!

If my son had not had been tutored by Daryl the past few years, I think perhaps my son’s mathematics results would be incredibly different. Before starting tutoring with Daryl, my son had come across several figures of authority that didn't see his potential to succeed and instead offered unhelpful advice and opinions. To quote but a few:
“He is not going to be able to cope with secondary school”
“If he were my child I would look at home schooling”
It was so refreshing when we finally found a tutor that recognised my son really wasn't beyond learning in a mainstream school and was capable of do very well in mathematics.
My son has a diagnosis of ADHD, I am in no doubt that at times my son’s disorganisation and poor concentration have been somewhat of a frustration for Daryl, however, he never looked to me, as a parent to resolve the issue. I have always valued Daryl’s thoughts and opinions and felt first and foremost that we were working together as a team to support my son.
This past year I have seen my son sit his GCSE Physics & Mathematics. I am extremely proud that he has not only “coped” with secondary school, he has flourished and achieved a grade B in both subjects.
With this in mind I would like to acknowledge and say thank you for all Daryl’s amazing hard work. Daryl is an outstanding private tutor and as a relatively young gentlemen himself I believe he is and it has been an absolute pleasure knowing him.

Tutoring Approach

My teaching approach embodies a long term approach to learning I teach students in a way which will allow them the potential to be successful in later higher study as well as the more short term goals of passing exams. I also try to make students more confident in their abilities overall not just the material I teach.

I strongly believe that a solid understanding of basic principles is the foundation to success in academic study. I focus a lot of time and energy on instilling these basic principles in students.

I am also a strong believer in understanding over ‘wrote learning’ I ensure that pupils understand what they are doing and why they are doing it, never encouraging them to simply regurgitate what they have seen previously.

I also encourage practical understanding of concepts frequently referencing real world examples and using objects to illustrate theory as I recognise that theory on its own given no relevance is harder to remember. Supplementary to this I also relate teaching material to potential job roles and tasks which I have knowledge of (mostly Banking or Business related) in order communicate usefulness to students and keep things interesting.

Finally I believe teaching successfully is ultimately about listening to your students I constantly encourage students to question things and express anything they don’t understand or are not too sure of. If a student looks unsure or hesitant about something I will ask open questions or get them to explain concepts to me in order to fully grasp their understanding. This also helps build their confidence and ability to express themselves accurately.
