Claire

I am a retired teacher, having worked for over 35 years teaching in mainstream primary schools and in special education.
I love to help children learn and to take pleasure with them when they see they can!
I have children and grandchildren and understand how important it is for parents to see their child progress.
I know what it is like when you feel that your child has more potential but just isn't reaching that potential.
Let me help your child learn!

Tutoring Experience

20 years in primary education
20 years in special education.
One-one tutoring
Working with parents. Parents are their child's first and most important educator, and parents also need support to recognise just how much they can and do teach their children
Additionally I work as a counsellor.

Tutoring Approach

Two main groups of children come for tuition, those who are struggling, and those who need some stretching/preparation for exams.
For both groups I need to understand what is within their grasp, and what is just out of their grasp, and that's where the learning needs to be focussed.
When children give a 'wrong' answer, it's my job to understand why they gave that answer. This provides an insight into the way they are thinking.
It's always important to give a child a sense of 'can do', and in fact, children can generally do a lot more than they had realised. Once they are given the right support and their confidence levels are good children make good progress.
Particularly in maths many children develop a 'I'm not good at it' sense, very early on in their education. My aim is to help them find out how good they can be at it!
