Cheryl

I have fervent belief in the value of personalised learning, to which the current UK school system does not really lend itself. With extensive experience in working with vulnerable young people, in particular those diagnosed with SEND, I understand that the needs of one student vary considerably from those of another, and am fully committed to helping individuals to achieve and succeed, whatever that may mean to them.
I have always had a passion for languages, linked to my love of travel - I have lived in various locations in the UK and also in France and Germany. I also hold a Masters degree in Translation and provide translation and proofreading services.
I enjoy playing the piano, flute and recorder and offer private tuition for these also. My other hobbies include reading, swimming and watching films.

Tutoring Experience

I have 20 years' experience of teaching across the 9-18 age range. I spent 7 years as Head of Languages in middle and 'high' schools, and 9 years in independent and mainstream specialist education settings, prior to my current post in an independent specialist setting.
I have taught and tutored languages from KS2 up to KS5 (A Level). I also tutor English / Literacy from KS1 level, as well as having taught the full KS3-KS4 curriculum (including English, Maths and Science to GCSE level) in specialist settings. I studied TESOL as part of my undergraduate degree, and have taught English as a foreign language to students across the 9-22 age range in France and to undergraduates at one of China's top universities.

Tutoring Approach

I am friendly, approachable and supportive and will endeavour to make lessons enjoyable. I use a variety of materials in my teaching, including use of ICT, film, authentic resources, as well as text books and worksheets. However, in return I require hard work from my students, including dedication to studying grammar (if this is a necessary component of their course). I firmly believe that literacy and languages are skills that require frequent practice and I expect students to complete tasks in their own time between lessons. I am happy to offer one-off / occasional refresher sessions to prevent students from falling behind in their studies over the holidays, or to prepare the ground for the new school year.
