Personal Description:

I offer one-to-one expert tuition in English. As well as supporting GCSE students for English Language and Literature, I can tutor years 5, 6 and 7 for entrance tests to grammar or independent schools and also offer support for KS1, KS2, KS3 and GCSE English essential components in creative writing, spelling, grammar, punctuation, vocabulary, comprehension and fluency in reading. I am also available for home-schooling students or adults. English is my passion and I hope to pass this on to my students. I love every aspect of it : reading, writing, composition, narratives, imaginative stories, plays and films. Personally I have the top grades in English 'O'level, 'A'level and a degree in English from a Russell Group university (Exeter). I also love teaching and get a real satisfaction from inspiring students and watching them progress. There is no greater moment than when the penny drops! I have just finished tutoring my son through Cambridge IGCSE English Literature and Language, June 2015 - success! B for language and A* for literature!

I am also available to teach English as a Foreign Language from beginner to advanced level in reading, writing, listening and speaking skills.

Tutoring Experience:

I have 6 years' teaching experience at a private school in Colchester, teaching English reading, listening, writing and speaking. I have taught a multitude of classes of all ages from beginner to advanced level with some success.
** News - Stop Press! January 2016 Sebastian has just been offered a place at Ipswich Senior school after 3 months of one to one tutoring. Sebastian says he was moved up 3 sets in his English class after regular weekly tutoring sessions with me. Well done Sebastian.
** Summer News 2016 - Stop Press! - my IGCSE Language student, L, who was predicted an 'E' grade before she came to me has just achieved a 'B' grade for her English Language. Well done !!
** Similar story with student LF who has just achieved Grade C for Literature June 2016, previously predicted an 'E'.
*** January 2017 Well done to Chloe who has just been awarded the All Rounder scholarship to Woodbridge school. Chloe achieved just under 100% in her comprehension!
*** January 2017 Congratulations to Layo, who after 9 months of one to one tutoring has been offered a place at St Joseph's College, Ipswich and Ipswich Girls High School.
*** June 2017 Well done Kai who achieved 118/120 for SPAG in his KS2 SATS as well as big leaps in his comprehension and writing.

Tutoring Approach:

I recognise each child as an individual with their own style of learning. My tutoring approach is to help them unlock the challenges of English in a variety of ways, tailor-made to each person enabling them to achieve their best result. This leads to an increased confidence, reflected in their school performance and homework. I will introduce and practise exam skills and techniques to prepare them for exams and tests. Your child may just need some extra support in this subject, which they may find difficult. Students will develop their vocabulary, reading and writing skills and learn to express, order and present ideas and information competently. Having my own 17 year old son at home, taking AS levels this summer, means I'm still involved with school life and syllabus demands. I've also taken a keen interest in his English tests and exams from an early age and know what is required in the curriculum. Learning with me will not be an easy ride, but I make it fun - not something to dread - and it becomes a a rewarding one, with the results to follow.

Are you struggling with writing for GCSE? From September 2017, I am running weekly, small group (Max 5 people) writing courses to support students taking the AQA 9-1 or Eduqas GCSE in summer 2018. Of course, good writing is required in any GCSE language course. I look forward to hearing from any student who feels they need help with creative, narrative, descriptive and directed writing, but please don't apply unless you are prepared to work hard, fully participate in each session, and complete homework every week in order to really improve. Writing is a vital component in papers 1& 2, contributing 50% of the total marks in each of the GCSE papers. Being able to write competently, accurately and with confidence is therefore of crucial importance to achieving good marks at this level. Students will learn how to produce sparkling narrative prose, convincing descriptive writing and competent directed writing. We will also focus on correct spelling, good grammar and punctuation practice, now an important part of the exam. If you are interested, please get in touch for more details of times and prices.
