I have 24 years teaching experience with different age groups. There is no one-size-fit-all, approach for my students, so my main specialisation is to cater differently to every students' needs. Part of the training came from working with Speech Therapists, Occupational Therapists and Education Psychologists; and also from my training working with gifted children. I like to see children finding a voice for themselves, gaining confidence in skills that they have, or have developed during my time with them. I believe that the ultimate success for working with young people is cooperation with parents, and providing pointers for parents to help their child succeed.
I specialise in preparing young children between 5-11 for school readiness: reading and writing; essay writing, comprehension and listening skills. I have taught 10 children for these purposes on a one-to-one basis over the last 8 years. I also work with children who need basic maths skills.
I work with teenagers who have problems writing and expressing their ideas, struggling with English as their Second Language and getting them to have confidence and ownership in their work as a student. I have 10 years experience in this area, teaching hundreds of students in classroom environments.
I also work with graduate and postgraduate students with editing and proof reading their work, helping them use strategies to get started on writing and reviewing literature read. I have worked with 6 students over the last 15 years. I have also worked with adult students preparing for their IELTS and ESOL.
Assess and teach, breaking down learning into small chunks. An example of success - a GCSE student who failed twice for his English Language Paper, passed after 5 hours tutoring session.
I have also successfully taught children to read and write. For example, a 12-year-old boy was referred to the psychologist by his teacher to assess why he was not progressing. His mother came to ask for assistance and after only three sessions of correcting his handwriting, I told him he did not need to continue the sessions as he had overcome his writing difficulties.
Some children have very poor hand writing skills, and they may have problems stringing their thoughts and ideas in a narrative required for writing, I will be able to help young people overcome these, and also to unlearn bad habits and develop new ways to approach their work. Writing and reading remediation goes a long way to help boost children's self perception and every little bit of success means helping the child to reduce frustration level and build their confidence in their schoolwork and their own personal well being.
For adults learning English, the one-to-one sessions help students progress at their own pace.
