I am a Chemical Biology PhD graduate (UCL, 2020) now working as a professional tutor online. I am a specialist in teaching Chemistry (all abilities), and also offer tuition in Biology (A-Level/GCSE), Maths and Physics (GCSE).

I have extensive experience teaching at all levels (GCSE, A-Level and University) and also have an advanced knowledge of these subjects across UK exam boards (OCR, AQA, Edexcel, WJEC) and IB qualifications.

I have also obtained a 1st class masters degree in Natural Sciences (UCL) which covered Chemistry, Biology, Pharmacology and Maths, and have also completed A-Levels in Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology to a high standard.

Studying intensively as a postgraduate, undergraduate, A-Level and GCSE student has highlighted various learning techniques that can be employed to help tutees achieve their desired grades in exams to come. I understand that every peer and tutee along the way has had a different approach to learning and this will be reflected in the teaching material I prepare for my tutees.

Tutoring Experience

Over the last 10 years I have tutored several students taking GCSE, A-Level and University courses, many of which were introduced to me through recommendations made by previous tutees. Tutoring over this period has amounted to over 500+ hours of tutoring experience at GCSE, A-Level and University Level.

Whilst studying for my PhD, I was heavily involved in teaching opportunities offered by UCL. I have accumulated over 200+ hours of teaching experience during this time which covers teaching laboratory techniques, marking coursework (and providing extensive feedback to students) and teaching content to undergraduate students.

Testimonials:

"[Calise] is friendly and approachable and is adept at explaining things in a variety of different ways to ensure the student understands every concept. He works at the student's pace and encourages questions and discussion. My son used to dislike biology and now really enjoys it! Highly recommend." - Michelle (GCSE Sciences + Maths 2022)

"Calise has been superb. He teaches our daughter chemistry A level in a very clear comprehensible way and responds in helpful terms to all my daughter's questions. She feels much more secure in her understanding since Calise has started teaching her." - Susan (A-Level Chemistry, 2020).

"Beyond his academic skills, our daughter appreciated his soft-spoken approach, listening to the needs she expressed, checking her understanding and pushing her to go above and beyond in her mastery of the concepts. He has given her the tools to excel, which she did with 2 8s and 2 9s." - Muriel (GCSE Science, 2019).

"Calise's approach is considered, intelligent and kind. One of his strengths is making a quick and accurate assessment of the pupil's needs and then making a realistic plan within the timeline to the exam" - Victoria (A-Level Chemistry, 2019).

Tutoring Approach

Throughout my studies I have tried and tested many learning and revision techniques. I truly believe each student is capable of learning almost any material once they have discovered the best method for them, which is achievable through correct guidance and persistence.

I prefer to take a light hearted and upbeat approach to tutoring, as I find it imperative to find a balance between enjoying the subject while staying focused enough to achieve the goal. I also believe it is important to teach my tutees important skills that will help them with future examinations that will benefit each tutee beyond our time together (e.g. making learning resources, exam techniques etc.). I also aim make myself available at all times of the day for communication and any short questions the student may have.

Most importantly, I am enthusiastic about the topics I teach, which is something I aim to pass onto my tutees; as generally students who enjoy to the topic excel and can have a fun time doing so!
