Brian

I am a graduate secondary school Mathematics teacher. After leaving full-time teaching, I ran a successful small business providing work-based assessments and training in specialist hardware and software helping people with disabilities to remain in employment. Much of the work was through the Department of Work and Pensions. During this time, I provided one-to-one tuition for GCSE Maths and all 11+ topics. I have over 25 years’ experience of private tuition.
Since winding up the business, I am now semi-retired but continue to provide tuition every evening during the week. I don’t teach at the weekend apart from very exceptional circumstances like the run up to exams.

Tutoring Experience

Completed a City & Guilds Computer programming course and later attained a B.Ed in secondary education. I taught Maths and IT at secondary level and then moved into specialist further education teaching maths and IT to GCSE level and also NVQ/GNVQ Business Admin. For the past 18 years running a small business providing work-based training in the use of computer packages such as voice recognition software. In 2018 I completed a second degree with the Open University being awarded a B.Sc.
I have experience of teaching 11+ and Common Entrance subjects - Maths, English, verbal and non-verbal reasoning, GCSE and IGCSE Maths.

Tutoring Approach

Having had a very negative experience of maths teaching when I was a pupil at school, I approach teaching in the way I would have liked to have been taught myself. I have a great deal of patience and have always had a good rapport with pupils and students. I believe that anyone can learn maths if they have the right teacher and it is put across in the right way. I believe teaching should be broad-based and should be an enjoyable experience and dare I say even fun sometimes.
