Online Maths Lessons

Oxford Mathematics graduate (First Class). Highly experienced specialist teacher and tutor of Mathematics and Further Mathematics, with nine years teaching experience at Westminster School. I offer tuition at all levels, including GCSE, A-level, Oxbridge preparation (including MAT, TMUA, and STEP), and private school entrance exams (8+,11+,13+, and 16+).

Tutoring Experience

I have taught Maths in leading independent school for more than ten years, including nine years at Westminster School (2009-2018). This means I have taught hundreds of pupils of all levels, from those who find maths challenging but want to improve their grades, to those who are looking to apply for Mathematics at Oxbridge.

I also have over 2000 hours of private tuition experience. Most of my clients have been through personal recommendations from pupils I have taught previously.
Some examples of feedback I have received:

“I really believe that Ben could explain pretty much anything to pretty much anyone”

“You made maths interesting. That’s coming from someone who has never like it, and never believed it could be interesting. Thank you.”

“Your teaching gave me the confidence I had always lacked in maths”

Awarded Scholarship at Hertford College, Oxford, for outstanding academic results. Qualified Teacher, with distinction in all PGCE modules. DBS checked.

Tutoring Approach

My considerable teaching and tutoring experience means that I am able to adapt my approach to the needs of the individual student.

The best way to make rapid and significant progress in mathematics is to really understand the underlying ideas. Sadly, many schools teach maths as a series of methods to be learned and followed. This is not only boring, but usually means the learner doesn’t understand why the methods work, and cannot adapt them to different questions or contexts.
My approach to teaching is to ensure that students understand the key ideas thoroughly. I achieve this through a combination of clear explanation, and asking appropriate questions to build understanding. By this I don’t mean asking the same question five times with the numbers changed (boring and unhelpful), but instead asking varied questions which use the same idea in different ways, gradually increasing in difficulty.
This approach not only improves understanding, but makes maths interesting. Maths is a subject which is really interesting when it is taught well, and really boring when it is taught badly. You will make much better progress in a subject you enjoy, with a teacher who can make it interesting.

I do all my tutoring online, with students from all over the UK, as well as other countries. For online tuition, I use a video call and an interactive whiteboard which both I and the student can write on. I find this setup to be just as effective as face to face lessons, and many of my students prefer this format. I ensure that I build up a rapport with the student, so that the lessons are fun and engaging as well as educational.
