I graduated with a First-Class honours in BSc Mathematics from Queen Mary University of London. I am a fully qualified Maths teacher and have been teaching in a state school for the past 5 years. I have taught all year groups (year 7-13), hence know the KS3, KS4 and KS5 specification to a very high level.

Tutoring Experience

I have been involved in working with children and young adults for 10 years now. I started of by tutoring people from my neighbourhood. This led to me then working as a weekend mentor at two schools in Tower Hamlets whilst attending university. Following graduation, I worked at a different school in Tower Hamlets as an academic mentor. My experiences of tutoring privately and within schools drove me to completing a PGCE in Mathematics at Kings College London, receiving a QTs (qualified teacher status) in Mathematics. I am now a Maths teacher at a school in Tower Hamlets. I have been teaching for a number of years now to students of all year groups (year 7-year 13). I also currently private tutor a number of students.

Evidently, I have huge amounts of experience in tutoring and teaching. Throughout these times, I have worked with all types of students with all abilities, ranging from high attainers to low attainers. I have worked with all year groups, ranging from year 7 to year 13, hence all Key Stages (3, 4 & 5).

Tutoring Approach

My approach varies depending on the student. I believe as a tutor/teacher it is very important that we cater to each individual student's needs. Upon starting with a new student, I ensure I have a short-term, mid-term and long term-plan. The first few lessons help me identify a student's biggest weaknesses at the time, and enable me to plan for more efficient a productive lessons. During a lesson, I will make sure the student understands a topic before moving on. I do this by regularly questioning the student and using examples which the student can relate to. This also helps them stay engaged throughout the lesson. The student is also given a question which helps us both check his/her understanding. Furthermore, I believe it is very important for a tutor and tutee to have a good relationship. Hence, I make an effort to build a rapport with my student. This allows a student to feel more comfortable in expressing their ideas and asking for help. Lastly, at the end of every lesson, I provide the student with homework to further consolidate their understanding and make the tutoring session a real success.

I understand that reading about an approach may be difficult to understand or visualise. Hence, I invite the parent/carer of the student to drop in and watch a tutoring session of their child to gain a better understanding of my approach.
