Andrew

I am qualified Maths Teacher with over 20 years of experience including teaching all secondary school ages including GCSE and A-level and holding a middle management position at a leading independent school London. I am currently at an award winning independent school in Surrey. I have also got experience teaching in comprehensive schools and with dyslexic and dyscalculic students. I have a real passion for one- to - one learning and have had the pleasure of successfully tutoring well over 100 students to date. I really enjoy helping students learn and see the rapid increase in progress and confidence that can be achieved from one-to-one tuition.
As a current teacher, crucially, I am familiar with all the changes to the syllabus for both GCSE and A-level and have the relevant materials to assist. The content has increased for both as has the type of questions. In order to prepare my students fully I ensure they have as much exposure to the problem solving style of questions in the new specification. Even if a students is not yet in Year 11 but is in Year 7 - 10 I will still introduce GCSE questions as appropriate to start building those crucial problem solving and application skills. Students learn best from someone passionate about the subject they are trying to learn. I am incredibly passionate about Mathematics though I appreciate that it is a challenging subject for many and so I strive to simplify topics to make them clear and easy to understand. Throughout my 25 years in the classroom I have acquired a real ability to view a challenging topic from a pupil's perspective and ensure my explanations are easier to understand. I have many strategies and teaching styles so that I can find a way which works best for the students. Please see my many 5 star reviews in the reviews section under my profile.

Tutoring Experience

I have successfully tutored many pupils for Maths GCSE and A-level (Both pure and applied modules) as well as younger secondary aged pupils. I can provide help with exam preparations or more general support with secondary school maths. I have also helped prepare pupils for the maths part of 11+ exams. /entrance test for grammar or private schools. I use my knowledge of examination board mark schemes to ensure that students present their answers in such a way as to maximise their mark. I have extensive experience with the major UK exam boards especially Edexcel and AQA. This in-depth familiarity with their specific syllabi, examination styles, and assessment criteria enables me to provide targeted and effective tuition, tailored to meet the unique requirements of each exam board. Whether it’s preparing for mid year tests, mock exams, or final assessments, I ensure that my students are well-equipped to excel. I am fully equipped and experienced in delivering effective online sessions and currently most of my tutees are taught this way.

Tutoring Approach

My approach is to get the student to think things out for themselves and enable them to gain confidence as they realise that they can answer questions successfully . I encourage students to tell me if, after an explanation, they still are not sure so that I can explain it again and also in a different way that may suit better. My approach is student-centric, focusing on individual strengths and addressing areas for improvement. By fostering a supportive and engaging learning environment, I aim to build my students’ confidence and deepen their understanding of mathematical concepts. This holistic approach not only prepares them for their exams but also builds their overall confidence as a learner which should then have a positive effect on their other subjects too, especially maths related ones. I can set tailored homework (if desired) to target areas of weakness that can then be reviewed in the next session. This is an effective way to consolidate the learning and advance more rapidly. For students aiming for the highest grades, the material will extend beyond the right to the highest level of the curriculum. This content is will to challenge them further and deepen their understanding, enabling them to excel with the most demanding of GCSE questions.
