I am a University Senior Teaching Fellow. My teaching interests focus are Maths, Science and Computing. Outside of work, I enjoy reading, running and spending time with my family.

Tutoring Experience

I have been teaching at a university level for the last 10 years with a vast experience of computing science and maths. Gone are the days where lecturers simply stand in front of a class and dispense knowledge. There is a growing emphasis on providing the material in different and engaging ways. Particularly with the sciences, there is so much potential to use additional material and technology to support the learning process that a large part of my time outside of contact hours with students is spent developing supporting material to aid the students.

Through my university role I have regular contact with schools promoting science and technology. I have recently achieved a postgraduate teaching qualification becoming a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Due to my work I currently spend more time working with older children but am equally able to engage with children of all ages.

Tutoring Approach

Learning styles change from student to student and it is important to find what works best for each student. I like to use a problem based learning approach where I introduce and area through presenting a problem and then work through a solution with the student. I then look to generalise from that solution such the the knowledge gained there can be applied in different situations. I feel that this works particularly well for maths and the science subjects where problem solving is one of the most challenging aspects of the subjects. Patience, the ability to explain a concept in different ways and most importantly enthusiasm for the topic are all key to learning.
