I love Maths and I enjoy teaching it. I am patient and I teach at the learning pace of my students; I continually assess my students to check mastery of the topic.

I discovered my passion for numbers at a very early age and that passion continues to this day. I have enjoyed a long career in the life insurance industry as an actuarial manager and then as an executive manager. I believe that Maths is not just a school subject, but a life skill that has many applications in our daily lives.

Colleagues and other parents call me Amy.

Tutoring Experience

I have years of experience tutoring Maths, from Year 7 upwards. During the pandemic, I devoted a large chunk of my time tutoring within the National Tutoring Program which aimed to help students make up for learning lost due to CoVid.

I currently teach GCSE Maths. I have done GCSE Maths intervention as a volunteer, and my students achieve grades which are 1-2 levels better than predicted in their mocks. I enjoy the challenge of working towards a definite goal, and it is very rewarding to see the good results within a few months.

I have been tutoring since my uni days, mostly on an unpaid basis. I would occasionally take on private tuition to earn extra spending money.

Tutoring Approach

I am available to teach throughout the school term, or on a short-term basis. I tailor my teaching according to the students' needs. My primary aim is for my students to understand the lesson and then apply their learning to solve word problems. Sometimes I will discover that a student has gaps in their learning, so I will go back to more basic concepts to make sure the student will grasp the current lesson. While I do not like teaching by rote, I will teach my students techniques to pass exams to the best of their ability.

I expect us to have preliminary conversations (by email or phone) to discuss your needs at no extra cost. If you are satisfied that I can help you achieve your goal, then we can decide on a regular tutoring schedule.

Parent's involvement is key to any child's success. If you are a parent, then by browsing this site you are already involved. It would be best if you are present at the initial session so we can talk about your expectations.

I believe that there are 3 obstacles a student faces in passing GCSE Maths:

  1. Exam anxiety. Many students who are quite smart do not do well in exams. The obvious reason is stress, especially over the time pressure. So I teach them techniques to manage their time and get them used to answering questions quickly by learning time-saving methods.

  2. Insufficient understanding of the material. Not everyone is good at all the topics covered by GCSEs. I can identify these areas and try different techniques to help the student understand the topic better.

  3. Lack of interest in studying. Unfortunately, this is beyond my influence!
