Alisha

I have been tutoring now for a year and a half, mostly working within schools in the Bristol area, however, I do have a small private client portfolio which I would like to expand on. I love teaching students to enjoy literature in a way that can expand their knowledge of the wider world and in ways that will benefit them when they leave school. A natural passion of literature is something I will always encourage, and I look forward to be able teach students who share this same passion as me!

I have a 2:1 bachelor's degree in English Literature from the University of Winchester, from which I graduated in the October of 2021. During my time studying, I was careful to choose modules that would benefit my career as a tutor and future teacher. These modules included focusing on Shakespeare, 18th and 19th century texts, poetry, Victorian crime fiction, as well as African American fiction through the ages.

I have begun my PGCE (with QTS) as of September 2022, so I am very much looking forward to sharing my knowledge with future generations!

Tutoring Experience

I have been self-employed for nearly two years, delivering high-quality English lessons in a secondary school in Bristol for nearly two years. I am responsible for online and in-person secondary school-aged students with various and sometimes complex social, speech, and language problems. Therefore, various teaching methods are needed to help students engage with the work set in sessions.

My key responsibilities included formulating appropriate and engaging lesson plans that cater to the abilities of the student and adhere to the needs of the exam board they will be examined by. I also make it my mission to ensure the sessions I lead are fun and interactive to ensure that the children I work with do not perceive their tutoring as a burden.

I plan for individual sessions catered fully to the client's unique needs, whether supplementing home-schooling or providing outside support alongside mainstream schooling. I have tutored children from age 9 to a-level students (18 years of age) struggling with dyslexia and speech and language issues that need 1-1 support that could not be provided in a school setting. Supporting their in-school learning, ensuring that they will not slip behind their peers in their learning.

In my time as a tutor, I have covered a wide variety of texts and poetry, these include:
Shakespearian texts;
- Othello,
- The Merchant of Venice,
- Macbeth,
- Romeo and Juliet,
- Much Ado About Nothing,
- The Tempest

19th century texts;
- The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde,
- Oliver Twist
- A Christmas Carol
- Jane Eyre

Modern texts:
- An Inspector Calls
- Never Let Me Go
- Lord of the Flies
- Of Mice and Men
- To Kill a Mockingbird
- Heroes

Poetry:
Love and Relationships (AQA)
Power and Conflict (AQA)

I can cover other texts with time to prepare and guidance from the student's school as to exam boards.

I have also taught the following topics at a-level (sociology and psychology):
Sociology:
- crime and deviance
- education
- stratification
- family
- beliefs
-theories and methods

Psychology:
- attachment
- social influence
- memory
- approaches in psychology
- research methods

Tutoring Approach

I keep my sessions student-focussed, focusing on their own weaknesses and difficulties. Working from the basics upwards, for example in literature:
- Revision materials and how to revise,
- How to read Shakespearian language,
- How to recognise and discuss literary techniques,
- Analysing poetry and literature,
- Understanding and critiquing structure,
- How to answer exam questions, and what examiners are looking for.

In sociology and psychology:
- How to answer exam questions, and what examiners are looking for,
- How to criticize case studies and theorists,
- Revision materials and how to revise.
