Personal Description:

"Alisdair helped me with my final major project, both with the statistics, and the academic writing. I was very happy to achieve a first for the project and I can't thank him enough for his help. I learned a lot with his tutoring, and improved my understanding of statistics and my academic writing. I now feel more confident going into my Msc next September. He was very fast at responding to my questions and emails, and was always very positive and helpful. After a few bad experiences with other tutors, I was extremely happy to receive Alisdairs' support. Thank you very much!" 5/5 Jeremy Ward (BSc)

Hi, I'm Alisdair.
I'm a friendly and approachable tutor with several years experience in tutoring and teaching. I endeavour to help others develop and improve their learning through my passion for teaching. In addition, I am a good listener, which is essential for this.

My specialist areas are cognitive psychology, social psychology, research methods and statistics, but I can tutor in all areas of psychology and assist with various study skills, including revision practise. I have been able to extend my expertise to tutor students studying courses such as human computer interaction, business studies and global marketing.

I graduated with a 2:1 degree in psychology (BSc Hons) then went on to complete a Masters (MRes) in psychological methods, followed by a Ph.D in cognitive neuroscience. I also obtained a 'Teach English as a foreign language' (TEFL) certificate.

Tutoring Experience:

Since 2006, I have taught psychology and research methods and statistics at various Universities in the U.K. and Canada to undergraduate and postgraduate students, as an assistant tutor, demonstrator and lecturer.

I also have vast experience in tutoring students with assisted learning needs, including Asperger syndrome, dyslexia and dyspraxia at group and one to one level. My one to one teaching experience extends to supervision of final year undergraduates and Master's students, therefore I have coherently supported and guided students through empirical projects, improving skills such as literature search, analysis and scientific writing.

In recent years, my tutoring has extended to AS and A-Level students, under the AQA and EDEXCEL exam boards. As a result of this, I can confidently and competently provide support to students at the early stages of learning about psychology.

In 2013, I was awarded an excellence in teaching award from the students union in my role as a demonstrator at Bournemouth University.

I also offer help with study skills, including exam preparation/revision, journal article reading, debate preparation, essay planning, report writing, presentation skills and editing of work.

Studying for many years has given me experience in realising the pressures that students face, and am able to use my awareness and knowledge to motivate learners. I feel my academic experience has given me the necessary skills to help students reach their full academic ability.

Tutoring Approach:

I would say I have a patient and relaxed approach to tutoring, ensuring that students have an enjoyable experience. My teaching style relies on honesty, patience and transparency.

I aim to offer you a bespoke tutoring service that meets your requirements, be it face to face, by telephone, or via online tutoring.

Having tutored both students with assisted learning needs and those without, I am able to competently customise a learning session to satisfy student needs.

Due to my numerous years in education, teaching studying and learning is very important to me. I have a real appreciation for how people learn and am able to adapt my teaching to different learning styles. Having marked a plethora of essays, reports and dissertations, I can help students develop attention to detail regarding appropriate use of grammar and APA formatting. I encourage my students to engage in critical thinking when carrying out tasks.

Depending on distance, I am able to meet at a location that suits. Skype, e-mail and telephone sessions can be arranged too.
