Personal Description:

Hi, I'm Alisdair.
I'm a friendly and approachable tutor with several years experience in tutoring and teaching. I endeavour to help others develop and improve their learning through my passion for teaching. In addition, I am a good listener, which is essential for this.

I graduated with a 2:1 degree in psychology (BSc Hons) then went on to complete a Masters (MRes) in psychological methods, followed by a Ph.D in cognitive neuroscience. I also obtained a 'Teach English as a foreign language' (TEFL) certificate.

My specialist areas are cognitive psychology, social psychology, research methods and statistics, but I can tutor in all areas of psychology and assist with various study skills, including revision practise. I have been able to extend my expertise to tutor students studying courses such as human computer interaction, business studies and global marketing. If you are learning English as a foreign language and would like to improve your English skills, then I can help with that too.

Tutoring Experience:

Since 2006, I have taught psychology and research methods and statistics at various Universities in the U.K. and Canada to undergraduate and postgraduate students, as an assistant tutor, demonstrator and lecturer.

I also have vast experience in tutoring students with assisted learning needs, including Asperger syndrome, dyslexia and dyspraxia at group and one to one level. My one to one teaching experience extends to supervision of final year undergraduates and Master's students, therefore I have coherently supported and guided students through empirical projects, improving skills such as literature search, analysis and scientific writing.

In recent years, my tutoring has extended to AS and A-Level students, under the AQA and EDEXCEL exam boards. As a result of this, I can confidently and competently provide support to students at the early stages of learning about psychology.

In 2013, I was awarded an excellence in teaching award from the students union in my role as a demonstrator at Bournemouth University.

I also offer help with study skills, including exam preparation/revision, journal article reading, debate preparation, essay planning, report writing, presentation skills and editing of work. In addition, I am now accepting students who wish to improve their English language skills (EFL).

Studying for many years has given me experience in realising the pressures that students face, and am able to use my awareness and knowledge to motivate learners. I feel my academic experience has given me the necessary skills to help students reach their full academic ability.

Below are some examples of student and parent feedback I have received as a tutor:

A-Level
"Alisdair was a great tutor, he helped my daughter pass her A level with the grade needed. He helped her understand anything she wasn't 100% on and got her ready for the exams. I would recommend him to anyone." 5/5

"What a great tutor! Nothing was too much trouble and he always went the extra mile. Without his help I don't believe I would have gotten grades needed to get on my chosen course at uni. I now have four placement offers including two that I previously never thought I had a chance of getting.
There is no need to shop around any further, just ring Alisdair and you will not regret it." 5/5

"With the help from Alisdair I felt we were able to find methods that would help me remember certain topics which I applied in my exams and felt confident with. Every week I was given questions to answer which I feel really helped me practice my writing techniques and I found very useful when we marked it to see where I could improve. I found that in the tutoring sessions I took away a lot of information and wasn't too rushed. Very knowledgeable and friendly too." 5/5

"Very happy with our choice of tutor! I would highly recommend Alisdair. He's knowledgeable and approachable and has helped my son fine tune his exam style answers over the last few months. Valuable, specific feedback from Alisdair was just what was needed." 5/5

Undergraduate
"Alisdair helped me with my final major project, both with the statistics, and the academic writing. I was very happy to achieve a first for the project and I can't thank him enough for his help. Thank you very much!" 5/5

"Alisdair has been a marvellous help with my Psychology degree, assisting both with SPSS data and ensuring my research project was of an acceptable standard. He is patient, knowledgeable and is always in touch straight away. Thank you Alisdair." 5/5

"Great tutor! Helped me with my dissertation so much. He is very clear with everything he teaches you and makes sure to explain everything precisely so that you understand."

Postgraduate
"It was extremely beneficial to discuss my project and planned analyses with Alisdair. He cleared my mind and gave many useful advices. I would definitely recommend this knowledgeable and friendly tutor!" 5/5

"Alisdair is an exceedingly knowledgeable, friendly and patient tutor who responds promptly and with amazing clarity on even the most complicated of SPSS issues. He has a great understanding of the planning and organisational problems associated with dyspraxia, and was of enormous help to my son during his MSc project, keeping him calm and giving advice where needed. I only wish we had discovered him earlier! My son has achieved a Distinction at Masters level, and without Alisdair’s reassuring and friendly discussions I don’t think he would have managed to even finish his project. I would recommend Alisdair highly as a tutor." 5/5

Tutoring Approach:

I have a patient approach to tutoring, ensuring that students have an enjoyable experience. My teaching style relies on honesty, patience and transparency.

I aim to offer you a bespoke tutoring service that meets your requirements, be it face to face, or via online tutoring.

Having tutored both students with assisted learning needs and those without, I am able to competently customise a learning session to satisfy and student's requirements.

Due to my numerous years in education, teaching studying and learning is very important to me. I have a real appreciation for how people learn and am able to adapt my teaching to different learning styles. Having marked a plethora of essays, reports and dissertations, I can help students develop attention to detail regarding appropriate use of grammar and APA formatting. I encourage my students to engage in critical thinking when carrying out tasks.

I have a vast selection of psychology textbooks that students can borrow and resources/materials that students can use, such as past exam papers, quizzes and revision cards.

I also offer tuition via Skype for those students who do not want to meet in person, or live far away. Therefore I can fully explain any concepts, ideas or subject content that you need help with, and give verbal help with assignments and exam prep online.

Group sessions (up to 3 students) can be arranged also.
Travel expenses incurred by tutor will be paid by student

Any session cancelled under 6 hours notice is subject to a 25% charge
