Personal Description:

Hi, I'm Alisdair.
I`m a friendly and approachable full time tutor with twelve years experience in tutoring and teaching. I endeavour to help students develop and improve their learning through my passion for teaching. In addition, I am a good listener, which is essential for this.

My first degree was in psychology (BSc Hons). I then went on to complete a Masters (MRes) in psychological methods, followed by a Ph.D in psychology/cognitive neuroscience. I also obtained a 'Teach English as a foreign language' (TEFL) certificate.

My specialist subject of expertise is psychology and can help with all areas including: cognitive psychology, social psychology, research methods and statistics and more. I have been able to extend my expertise to tutor students studying courses such as sociology and have helped students with their stats on human computer interaction, business studies and global marketing courses. If you are learning English as a foreign language and would like to improve your English skills, then I can help with that too. Or if you want help with study skills or proofreading then feel free to get in touch.

Tutoring Experience:

Since 2006, I have taught psychology and research methods and statistics at various Universities in the U.K. and Canada to undergraduate and postgraduate students, as a tutor, demonstrator and lecturer.

I also have vast experience in tutoring students with assisted learning needs including Asperger syndrome, dyslexia and dyspraxia at group and one to one level. My one to one teaching experience extends to supervision of final year undergraduates and Masters students, therefore I have coherently supported and guided students through empirical projects, improving skills such as literature search & review, analysis and scientific writing.

In recent years, my tutoring has extended to AS and A-Level students, under the AQA, EDEXCEL and CIE exam boards. As a result of this, I can confidently and competently provide support to students at the early stages of learning psychology. If you are learning psychology on an `Access course` then I am able to assist you too.

In 2013, I was awarded an excellence in teaching award from the students union in my role as a demonstrator at Bournemouth University.

I also offer help with study skills, including exam preparation/revision, journal article reading, debate preparation, essay planning, report/dissertation writing, presentation skills and editing of work. If you need help using SPSS and interpreting data analysis, then get in touch.

Studying for many years has given me experience in realising the pressures that students face, and am able to use my awareness and knowledge to motivate learners. I feel my academic experience has given me the necessary skills to help students reach their full academic ability.

Below are some examples of student and parent feedback I have received:

A-Level:

Lily (5/5): Grade = A
Alisdair was an amazing Tutor for my daughter. Her A Level tutor went on sick leave the term before her A Level exam, and after an initial couple of one to one meetings, we settled upon a series of Skype tutorials which were brilliant. Alisdair would send key exam questions for my daughter to do prior to the Skype tutorial, and she would send them back to him to mark before their tutorial. The system was so engaging and efficient that she went from a grade D in her mock A Level to a grade A in her actual A Level exam. Alisdair is flexible, personable and very effective. I would totally recommend his services.

Andrew (Olivia) (5/5): Grade = B
Alisdair was a great tutor, he helped my daughter pass her A level with the grade needed. He helped her understand anything she wasn`t 100% on and got her ready for the exams. I would recommend him to anyone.

Michelle (Sammy) 5/5: Grade = B
An excellent tutor - patient, kind, encouraging, and well organised with great resources. We used Alisdair`s services both for one to one sessions and online in the run up to my daughter`s A-levels when she experienced a pre-exam confidence crisis. She found him to be an effective and empathetic tutor, with an obvious enthusiasm for his subject. We really appreciated Alisdair`s experience, which enabled him to work out how best to support my daughter and get her back on track. Alisdair was incredibly helpful, and very flexible in his scheduling of sessions. A`levels are now over, and I am sure that Alisdair`s help made a huge difference. Highly recommended!

Undergraduate:

Jeremy: (5/5) Grade = 1st
”Alisdair helped me with my final major project, both with the statistics, and the academic writing. I was very happy to achieve a first for the project and I can`t thank him enough for his help. I learned a lot with his tutoring, and improved my understanding of statistics and my academic writing. I now feel more confident going into my Msc next September. He was very fast at responding to my questions and emails, and was always very positive and helpful."

Sarah 5/5
"Alisdair has been a marvellous help with my Psychology degree, assisting both with SPSS data and ensuring my research project was of an acceptable standard. He is patient, knowledgeable and is always in touch straight away. Thank you Alisdair."

Eamonn (5/5):
Alisdair was very helpful in my dealings with him. He is swift to reply, appears to have a broad range of knowledge, and takes a structured approach. I would certainly call upon his experience again in the future!

MASTERS:

From Karthika (5/5) Grade = Distinction
Alisdair is truly excellent. Without his insightful comments and suggestions, the formation process of my dissertation from beginning to end would not have been feasible. He is great with SPSS and explains even the most difficult functions thoroughly with me. Moreover, he was punctual for all our sessions and I highly appreciated the quick turnaround which allowed me to amend my work before my deadline. I would highly recommend Alisdair!

Charlotte (5/5): Grade = Distinction
Thank you Alisdair for the benefit of your knowledge, experience and skills. Alisdair is extremely meticulous and has an eye for detail. He has made some really helpful suggestions to enhance the quality of my MSc dissertation of which I achieved a Distinction in. I would highly recommend. Thanks again.

Mark (5/5) Grade = Distinction
"Alisdair is an exceedingly knowledgeable, friendly and patient tutor who responds promptly and with amazing clarity on even the most complicated of SPSS issues. He has a great understanding of the planning and organisational problems associated with dyspraxia, and was of enormous help to my son during his MSc project, keeping him calm and giving advice where needed. I only wish we had discovered him earlier! My son has achieved a Distinction at Masters level, and without Alisdair’s reassuring and friendly discussions I don’t think he would have managed to even finish his project. I would recommend Alisdair highly as a tutor."

PHD:

Paraya (5/5):
"Alisdair helped me with statistics for psychology, as it’s something I really struggle with.
Alisdair is an excellent Tutor, not only is he extremely knowledgeable and patient but he explains things in a really clear and understandable way. I wouldn`t hesitate in recommending Alisdair".

Tutoring Approach:

I have a patient approach to tutoring, ensuring that students have an enjoyable experience. My teaching style relies on honesty, patience and transparency.

I aim to offer you a bespoke tutoring service that meets your requirements, be it face to face, or via online tutoring.

Having tutored both students with assisted learning needs and those without, I am able to competently customise a learning session to satisfy any student's requirements.

Due to my numerous years in education, teaching studying and learning is very important to me. I have a real appreciation for how people learn and am able to adapt my teaching to different learning styles. Having marked a plethora of essays, reports and dissertations, I can help students develop attention to detail regarding appropriate use of grammar and APA formatting. I encourage my students to engage in critical thinking when carrying out tasks.

I have a vast selection of psychology textbooks that students can borrow and resources/materials that students can use, such as past exam papers, quizzes and revision cards.

I also offer tuition via Skype for those students who do not want to meet in person, or live far away. Therefore I can fully explain any concepts, ideas or subject content that you need help with, and give verbal help with assignments and exam prep online.
