Hi, I'm Alice! I grew up in Birmingham but studied English Literature in Glasgow and Belfast -- so I've had a very interesting time exploring different locations in the UK. However, it's great to be back in my hometown and one of my greatest passions is engaging with new students and discussing literature! I have a first class degree in English Literature and a Masters degree (with Merit) in 'Poetry & Criticism'. In addition I am about to embark on my Poetry PhD with the University of Birmingham. (2018 onwards). However I'm also keen on Film & TV and Cultural Studies - and will use whatever resource available to enhance the experience of my students. I live in Edgbaston but have easy access to several burroughs of Birmingham (including Harborne, Kings Heath, Moseley, Selly Oak etc).
I am extremely passionate about English teaching and mentoring, and have extensive experience both of English Literature tutoring and teaching English as a foreign language. Last year, I worked as an Academic Learning Mentor and Librarian at Joseph Chamberlain 6th Form College, in Highgate. I ran the library and recommended literature to students, as well as offering bespoke literature and language workshops and one-on-one tutoring to boost A level grades. I also worked (from April to July 2017) as a Teaching Assistant at Mansfield Green E-ACT Primary Academy in Acton, where I supported Year 3 and Year 5. I am comfortable teaching a variety of age groups and also have experience teaching English as a foreign language to an adult learner in Spain. I am an experienced tutor on First Tutors.
N.B: I have a recent Criminal Disclosure check (dated Jan 2017) and a Northern Ireland Criminal Access Check dated 2016.
I believe that the teaching of English Literature and the English language can be massively enhanced by using a diverse variety of literature, and by responding sensitively to the passions, interests and personality of the student. I am lucky to have access to a huge supply of adult and children's literature and I would certainly utilise this facility to keep a variety of different books coming in, which would serve to engage my student. I believe that teaching should be a two-way dialogue, and that often, children who perform badly in English, or who feel apathetic towards the subject, simply have not been helped to discover the literature which appeals to them individually. Learning to love reading is the easiest shortcut to excellence in English Literature, and it is also indispensable to anyone who is serious about excelling at English as a foreign language. In addition, my tutoring is precise and target-based (using a steady yet manageable stream of small homework tasks, with the option of regular progress reports for parents). I expect all my students to leave my tutelage with an expanded vocabulary, a stronger grasp of grammar and a renewed interest in English both as a pleasurable pastime and as a school and university subject. Drop me a message to find out more! :)
