Private Sociology Tutor in Southsea

I am a dedicated and enthusiastic teacher of Sociology in a large, successful Sixth Form college in Hampshire. I live in Portsmouth but frequently tutor via Google meet (remotely). I am able to travel if required. I have been a teacher for 20 years and feel passionately about supporting young people to achieve their academic potential.

I am married and have a daughter and a son. In my leisure time I enjoy running, listening to live music and travelling to interesting parts of the world.

Tutoring Experience

I have experience of teaching A level Sociology, CTEC Health & Social Care and the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). I am currently Head of A Level Sociology in a Hampshire Sixth Form college and therefore have a wealth of experience in supporting students to achieve high grades and maximise their full potential. I also have 12 years experience as an examiner of A Level Sociology which means I can offer an excellent insight to the most recent demands from the examination boards. I understand the skills the examiners are looking for in student scripts, effective essay structure and overall responses. I have been very successful in assisting students to develop these essential examination skills and to approach their exams with confidence.

My teaching style can be tailored to the individual needs of the student in order for them to use sociological concepts and theories with clarity and certainty. In my current teaching job, I plan and deliver support sessions to Sociology students in the period before their exams; in addition to their lessons. I am adept at using a variety of revision strategies and techniques to ensure outstanding results from the students I teach and tutor.

Tutoring Approach

I am able to offer flexibilty with my tutoring approach to meet the needs of the individual. I can assess which key skills are in need of development and implement effective strategies to ensure improvement. It is essential that breadth and depth of sociological theories and concepts are built prior to the A Level exams and the more challenging skills of analysis and evaluation are developed as well. I have the ability to support individuals in mastering these skills with confidence and in an encouraging way.

Through an understanding of contemporary examples and core studies, I can help students to have a critical sociological insight in to contemporary society. The ability to evaluate competing 'world views' is a fundamental feature of A Level Sociology courses and an element that productive tutoring can achieve.
