Personal Description:

Successfully helped students get to Stanford, Oxford, Havard, Cambridge and Imperial College. I am from a family of educators and am a full-time professional tutor with over 10 years of experience. I enjoy helping others reach their potential. I have a Degree and PhD in Physics.

Tutoring Experience:

- 12 years of one to one individualised tutoring experience (A-levels and GCSEs)
- 6 years of preparing UK students for the American SAT/ACT and SAT subject tests
- Homeschooled a variety of students with Dyslexia
- Experience of tutoring online
- Previously Tutored at Oxford College
- Pioneering the first Welsh language Physics programme in Wales

This is a reference to say that we were thoroughly delighted with Alex as a Maths tutor.

He was always on time, reliable, and knew the syllabus’s for GCSE, A levels and SAT’s. He taught my son, how to work out, and solve every maths problem that could ever come up, and understood my son’s way of learning. I feel it is very important to understand the pupil, and Alex knew how to do this and help my son J reach his potential.
- MP (US SATs and A-level Maths)

Thank you! M received A*'s in all her exams and R received a B in Maths! (GCSE Maths, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology)

I am very proud of my daughter's results, thank you very much for helping them and encouraging them to reach high!!!
- GC (A-level Maths)

Alex is wonderful with pupils, patient, and will go through everything an exam requires, even suggesting what calculators and pencils etc are needed.

I recommend, him without hesitation, and know we were lucky to find him.
- MP (A-level Maths)

Thank you, I just opened my results and I'm really pleased. I got an A in maths!! Which I was really surprised because I thought the exam hadn't gone too well. Individually I got, A in C1, B in C2, and A for stats.

For my other subjects I was also very pleased.
Thanks so much for all your help and helping me prepare for these, I couldn't have done it with out you.
- M (A-level Maths)

Thanks again for all your help, honestly don't think I couldn't have got there without your help Alex!
- Pr (A-level Maths)

Tutoring Approach:

Having initially trained as an assistant lecturer at the University of Aberystwyth, I regularly attend courses and lectures in the UK to keep abreast of new techniques and pedagogy.

I am continuously training and have only recently completed the “Learning How to Learn” MOOC course provided by the University of San Diego with Dr Barbara Oakley.

My first action when working with a new student is to identify any weaknesses or difficulties the student might have and to address any issues as soon as possible to improve the student's confidence in the subject. I take great care in using several methods to make sure that the student understands the topic, as each student has their own way of learning and understanding. I have previously tutored several students at Eton College, Dulwich College, Brighton College, Collet Court, Imperial College, Oxford, MPW and JAGS. Many of the students I have tutored in the past few years were able to gain admission to many reputable universities including Oxford, Cambridge, Stanford, Harvard, UCL and Imperial College.

Past Student Examples:

Tutored J for the SAT and SAT 2 Maths fully: This involved filling in missing topics from UK education that he would need to pass the American exams. The tutoring also involved changing his way of thinking about math and numbers – so as to better tackle the SAT exams. He is now Studying at Stanford.

M was predicted A’s and B’s for her IGCSEs. Having received tutoring in all 3 science topics (Physics, Chemistry and Biology) and Mathematics she achieved all A*’s. M was incredibly apprehensive about her exams – most of the tutoring involved assisting M with filling in gaps in her knowledge, harder questions and meticulously preparing M for all eventualities to lower her anxiety.

A is an University student studying Computer Programming (Exeter). He contacted me having failed his first-year exam in Linear Algebra due to non-attendance at lectures. In a 3 weeks period, I assisted him through the whole course from scratch and he passed the exam on the retake (no grades given on re-takes) – and he is now allowed to continue on to his second year.

A physics student from Eton College who was studying the WJEC board for Physics. The student needed high grades to gain his place at Oxford. The student was very bright but needed some help in fully understanding some topics and needed assistance on how to answer the questions fully in order to maximise his potential. He received an A* in his Physics exam and is currently Studying at Oxford.
