Alex

I am an energetic and passionate historian who has recently finished my doctoral studies at the University of Oxford. Alongside my research, I have acquired extensive teaching experience both in Secondary and Higher Education. I offer tuition in History, Government & Politics, and Oxbridge and secondary school entrance exams and interviews.

Tutoring Experience

I have been teaching and tutoring for over 10 years. My first experience was teaching English to school pupils in small Italian town in the heart of the Alps after completing my A-levels. I continued to teach in this town, returning each year during the vacations from my undergraduate studies at King's. Upon graduation from the BA in 2013, I worked for a year as a private tutor and as a graduate teaching assistant at King's while I studied for my MA. Following the Masters, I moved to Oxford to embark upon a doctorate. Alongside my doctoral research, I taught History part-time at Magdalen College School, Oxford, and lectured in Medieval History at the University of Oxford. As a doctoral student, I also conducted undergraduate admissions interviews at Corpus Christi College, Oxford. After several years in Oxford, I have returned to the West Midlands, my old stomping ground, while I write up my thesis.

Tutoring Approach

Teaching and learning, especially in subjects like History and Politics, should always be stimulating and fun. The solid foundation of a critical mind is the acquisition of knowledge but often the difficulty comes in applying that knowledge in order to write persuasive analysis and argumentation. My approach is to try to make the subject matter relevant and interesting so that learning never becomes a chore. I then arm tutees with the ability to think critically and to write analytically with a clear sense of argument and structure. This often does not require a large amount of extra material to get through, but it requires instilling the tutee with confidence in their own ability to achieve excellence.
